His defense has been amazing this season if you ask me, especially recently. His blocks have gone way up, his rebounding has improved. His impact on the defense has been great for the Rockets. It looks like he just needed to find his groove with his new pre-game workout and with coming back from surgery.

I believe he can at least make the 2nd team, He certainly won't make the 1st team with Dwight Howard playing. I don't know a center that can make it over him for the 2nd team. I believe Tim Duncan will still be listed as a Power Forward anyways. They still prefer him listed as one, he probably always will be until his career is over.

I believe he deserves to make it and will. I won't be disappointed if he won't because Hey, the Media isn't a fan of appreciating his game.

I think he started too late. Plus, the center spots in both the first and second team have better defensive centers. So.. no.

I believe it will be strictly decided by if Tim Duncan is considered a center or not. If he is considered a center on the team, clearly he will make it over Yao. Since Duncan has not been considered a center in any All-NBA teams, I don't believe he will be considered a center this year either.

I don't know any center better defensively than Yao this season other than Howard and Duncan this year.

Yao is arguably our most valuable defensive player. But he doesn't have the reputation of being a great defender, and there are matchups where he becomes a defensive liability. So I doubt it.

BTW, did Shaq ever make an All-Defensive team?

no, its all about highlights, if you ask a random NBA fan who averages more blocks, they'd probably say Lebron James.

With the scorekeepers grossly undercounting Yao's blocked shot stats, he will not make it even though he deserves to.

It's a no for me if you ask me.No doubt that Yao has been playing great defense on the court recently, but just not good enough to make neither the 1st nor 2nd all-defensive team.

No, ESPN doesn't respect Yao as a star.

They just treat him like a 2nd tier player and not the Elite player he has been for us. Yao will prove people wrong this year...just watch. If he continues playing this way (and the refs call him somewhat fair) I can see the Rockets getting 2nd or 3rd seed and making it to the second round and maybe giving the Spurs a run for their money.

He has made it twice, behind two Defensive player of the years. Our Mutombo and One of the greatest centers of all-time Alonzo Mourning

    http://www.nba.com/history/awards_defensiveteams.html

He made it in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001

Shaq was a very good rebounder in those years. For Yao to get consideration, he'll have to put up bigger numbers I think. He just doesn't have the reputation of an intimidator.

9.7 rebs in 33 minutes alongside a dominant rebounder in Scola.

    He's doing fairly well.

yao's defense on shaq was sensational the other night. really, that was the best 1-on-1 defense i've seen on shaq since a very long time.

i agree with durvasa, though. yao might be our most valuable defender but he has his defensive flaws. a lot of people will just label him as a really bad defender because he's challenged with the pick and roll and he looks clumsy. imho, that's ridiculously ignorant but that's just how it is. shaq had the same problems but at least there were some great defenders at his position in his prime. now there's all this hype about dwight howard and he'll probably not only end up with the dpoty award but also with an all-defense 1st team nomination.

All Defensive Teams aren't voted on by position, but rather, individually (i.e. a "center" is not necessarily included by default on the 1st or 2nd team).

So no, Yao has no chance.

Even Howard and the rest of the centers vanished in the thin air the rest of the season, the media will still select Duncan as the All Defensive Center 1st team even though they categorized Duncan as PF in all-star voting. This show how much the media disrespect Yao as a player!

I think this is the All-Defense Teams:

    1st All-Defense Team

    G - Kobe Bryant
    G - Chris Paul
    F - Kevin Garnett
    F - Tim Duncan
    C - Dwight Howard

    2nd All-Defense Team

    G - Rajon Rondo
    G - Dwayne Wade
    F - Paul Pierce
    F - LeBron James
    C - ?

You know what. I think Yao will get on the 2nd team. I can't think of anyone else who could be chosen in front of him. But if the voters consider Duncan as a 5-man, then I think it will be:

    G - Paul
    G - Kobe
    F - LeBron
    F - Garnett
    C - Howard

    G - Rondo
    G - Wade
    F - Artest
    F - Pierce
    C - Duncan

Yep, however Billups needs to be in over Rajon Rondo and Battier or Artest is going to make it over Pierce.

The only way Yao isn't going to make it is if they consider Duncan a center, which they probably won't. I don't know who else could get credit at center, Rasheed?

What are you talking about? Do you remember 2-3 years ago when LeBron was on the All-NBA 2nd team? People just thought Duncan was going to be considered a center so Amare got in because they considered Duncan a forward and he had more votes than LeBron James.

Yao's got a chance, a pretty damn good one if the media recognizes it. One person I know that will be voting for Yao is probably Jeff Van Gundy and Jon Barry.
