Why doesn't Adelman understand that? You'd think the coach would want to give the minutes to the guys he thinks give the team the best chance of winning. But if Adelman gives that many minutes to Battier, he must WANT THE TEAM TO LOSE! Or maybe he just knows basketball better than most Clutchfans posters.
Bruce Bowen is still a pest at 37. Shane will play a longer career than most because of his lack of athleticism. (I hope)
he would if tracy mcgrady was healthy or had other options. just like how adelman played/started hayes earlier on last yr until scola and landry emerged. he just has a very young wafer and a very old brent barry. adelman understands it. if wafer improved his defense AT ALL, then he would get more minutes.
I think you misunderstood or misread what i wrote I wrote Battier use to score 10ppg on an offensively average team (JVG) and now he averages 7 ppg on an offensively above average team (adelman, this year)... unless shane also averaged 7 ppg with JVG?
So you knew that Battier is the lowest scoring player in the NBA among those who regularly start and play over 30 mpg? Why didn't you tell the rest of us?
You shouldn't even bring statistical analysis into your argument. You'd have been better served just repeating what you've always said. You don't like Battier and you think he stinks. Bringing stats into the mix just shadows your point. Let's agree on a few things. No one ever called Morey a god. He is, however, smarter than you when it comes to evaluating basketball talent and how well each particular player's talent will fit with our team and what we like to do. He is his entire stats team show up everyday with one goal in mind, improving the team. No matter your education, background, or clout as a poster here, I hope you would agree that Morey's stat geeks > Kwame Moreover, I think its a bit early to judge whether we wasted a pick on Dorsey. I'd agree that DeAndre has shown some ability with the Clips this year but at this point in they're respective careers, they can still go either way. We can disagree on trading the 8 pick for Battier. I am at the complete other end of the spectrum than you when it comes to the value of a guy like Shane. If Roy was still there, then he was the pick. He got nabbed at 7, so Morey's trade went down. A proven vet for an unproven Rook who has turned out to be a special player. And we shedded the Stro show's 5 mil per year contract in the process. I would do that trade every time without hesitation.
Man, i had a chance to bbq and come back at its still on and poppin. No one said Battier wasnt a nba quality player, but what the rockets are getting is a diminishing return on their investment. I bet, not really, but the rox didnt think they were getting a guy this bad offensively. I didn't start watching battier after the rox dealt for him, i've watched his career in memphis as well. I remember him shooting mid range jimmies and posting up and stuff. I remember him attacking the basket more and filling the break. What has happened is a player failing to improve during the offseason and diminishing skills. Think about this, in memphis, 25% of his shots were from 3pt range. Since he's been in houston, 60% is his norm. Also, he has gone to the ft line half of what he did in memphis. What does that say? That tells me a guy that cant or wont motion in the offense, wont fill the lane, wont go to the basket. Now on a team that has alot of those slashing, attacking types, that cool, but battier passes the buck to less skilled people when the game is tight or there is a injury. One would expect a guy that was traded for the #8 lotto pick that he could pick it up. Hell, old ass Howard use to pick it up when Yao went down. Rafer and the rookie scola last year picked it up when yao went down. Evereyone else accepts the responsibility of picking it up offensively, yet shane never does. he just runs to the corner, never hugs or curls a screen, never fills the lane, never cuts off a yao entry pass, yet people allow him to slide. Until this year, he was the 3rd highest paid player on the team and the highest draft pick next to yao. Why do fans accept less from a guy like that? Someone brought up bowen earlier. If bowen was traded for what the rox traded for to get battier, believe me, there would be higher expectations. Bowen was a journeyman, undrafted free agent. DD, i cant believe you brought Elie into this conversation and the same sentence as battier. How many times have you seen guys come at elie out of control, elie pump fake, and either shoots the floater or dunk it on someones head? How many times have you seen Elie filling the lane for the dunk? I expect better from you baytown.
This is why you're called a hater. You're spitting out random statements, a lot of them hold no truth, it sounds like you're just pissed off, ranting, or have something against him personally. You say he's shown no improvements at all?? The moment he said he was feeling back to normal he went back to the old battier, that was over a month ago, it wasnt until this month, 4 games, that he went cold again. If you want to argue that he's regressed, fine, but how is a whole month and a half not a significant sign of improvement?? Why start complainging about him now when he's only gone cold again for 4 games, why not wait several games? $ games is well within the definition of a shooting slump, it's not unrealistic to conclude that he's been back for over a month and this is just a slump. you keep refering to this year, he was IN PAIN, not rehabbed, not in shape! Why is that so hard to understand?!?! EVERYONE READ THIS: His foot was sore and in pain. There was swelling. He needed to rest it because he tweaked it during rehabb after pushing off of it too hard too soon. That meant he couldn't run! no conditioning! No playing! he couldn't practice his normal shot because he couldnt jump! He just came right in a month into the season without having a training camp and started playing games. His foot would swell, so he'd stay off of it until the next game. Once again, no playing, no practice, no running, no shooting between games! Maybe his foot felt good enough here and there and he's sneak in a drill or play, but for the most part he'd rest it. On top of that he had to play with a painful foot. So there was lack of conditioning, lack of practice, and pain. What did you expect? For him to come out like the old shane? He took a few games off in early dec and stayed out until the ankle healed as much as it could on its own. The pain was gone for the most part. so that's when he came back this last time in early jan, BUT he still had not been practicing or running. So for him, the first few weeks of Jan were like coming into training camp out of shape. there was no pain, but the endurance was going to take a while to develop, and he had to get his timing and rythm back on his shot. Perhaps he had been practicing shooting set shots, now he had to get the timing back on JUMPshots. About 3-4 weeks later (right before the ASG) he started playing better and shortly after said he felt almost 100%. 3-4 weeks is about the length of training camp, so that was his training camp, when he finally got in shape, got his shot , etc. So why would anyone use the first half of the season to gauge his skill level?? I cant understand why fans don't get this...
The fact that Shane has low PPG stats is not a surprise. We don't have to look at the stats to tell us that. Just watch the games. The reason Shane is valuable is that he is capable of scoring when asked, but chooses to defer to more efficient offensive options when he has a man on him. When he is open in a favorable position, he shoots. When he is not open or he is in an inefficient position, he passes to someone who has a better shot. He only becomes an offensive liability when he misses shots that are wide open or makes bad passes. Historically, Shane is not prone to either of those things. This is what separates him from Chuck Hayes. Then, in addition to being a functionally efficient player on offense, he serves as a coach on the floor, hustles after loose balls, and plays nearly flawless position defense.
So you don't think it's important that Battier is the lowest scoring player in the NBA among those who regularly start and play over 30 mpg? Do you think that's good enough to get the job done in the playoffs? What if somebody has an off game? Is the guy who likes to stand in the corner on offense going to pick up the slack? His history in the playoffs indicates that he will not. Basically, everybody has to play flawlessly on offense if Battier continues his current production. There is no room for error. That's unfortunate for the Rockets because the team can't play perfectly all the time. If Shane the proven vet is such an asset then why haven't the Rockets "won now" since that was the mode that they were and why they got him? Why didn't he help the Grizzlies win a playoff game? Why is his record in the playoffs 5-20? Of course he can't take the blame for all this, but there is a disturbing trend at play here. RV6, please stop making excuses for Battier.
When has shane ever stepped when a teammate went down? When has he ever shown the ability to score when he wants to? You dont think a avg offensive team the rockets have been cant use points from what is known as a scoring position?
then why play him a ton of minutes? that's what i'm arguing about. if you feel he's not in shape to do what he should do, then you shoudl agree with me. when he thinks he's back to his tip top form, then play him more minutes.
even people who defend shane call him a "non-scoring threat." nobody is expecting shane to do much offensively, if anything at all.
I do watch the games which is why I don't rely on +/- numbers and things of that sort. Shane doesn't have a low ppg avg, he has THE LOWEST ppg avg in the NBA among those who regularly start and play over 30 mpg. I think that's statistically significant. As leebigez mentioned, this lack of offensive production is compounded since it comes from a scoring position. I don't think 6 ppg at over 30 mpg is going to get the job done in the playoffs. You mention some intangibles, but his lack of athleticism, physical decline, inability to create, poor ball handling skills, horrible transition offense, and his penchant for standing in the corner on offense are intangibles as well. Factoring all these things in including his 6 ppg avg, I think his weaknesses outweigh his supposed strengths.
Battier has my full support. 99.9% of guys here hate T-macs ball hugging, brick laying, team killing antics. And here you have a guy who understands "efficiency", buys into "team" concept and has great rapports with fellow players and you still find something to complain about? If it came to it, begining the very next game he could put up 12 points a game on 45% shooting. But where are those shots going to come from? Artest? Brooks? Scola? Artest may stop people when he wants to but he doesnt always take it as the priority. Battier does. I have yet to see a single game where he didn't come ready for work. Let him be.
This assessment is garbage. Pure garbage. You posted this because Shane's 1-6 shooting didn't entertain you well enough. Did the Rockets not score 116 points last night? Do you think it's just a coincidence that the Rockets consistently happen to score a lot more whenever Shane is on the court? Are you more interested in individual highlights than team success? I would like to see you attempt to answer those questions honestly. Really.
You should read the entire thread before gracing us with your presence. These issues have all been raised and addressed. Although instead of inflammatory criticism, please tell us how Battier is responsible for the team scoring more when he mostly just stands in the corner on offense? Osmosis?
Bingo. That highlighted part tells me that you don't even have a clue exactly what it is that Battier does on offense that helps the team score more efficiently. You don't watch him at all -- you only see him whenever the ball ends up in his hands and he shoots the ball, which, clearly, does not happen as often as you'd like. You want to be entertained, and unfortunately for you, Battier is not an entertainer. For your own good, next time you watch a Rockets game, try to actually pay attention to Battier and see what he what he is doing on offense, and then afterwards you might want to reevaluate your "he mostly just stands in the corner" opinion.
Battier does not care about stats and if he did we would be in trouble, I am so glad that Morey and the rest of the brass does not listen to you ****s because if we did we would have a starting line up of Steve Francis (He can create on his own, **** off) James White (He can score in the D league he is the next coming of Clyde, **** off) And it goes, please think before you comment I Wonder if James ****ing White will suit tomorrow? Who gives a damn, he sucks balls and wont contribute to a NBA roster
I want what is best for the Rockets. I believe that 6 ppg @ over 30 mpg is not going to get the job done in the playoffs. Given Shane's history, I don't believe he is going to step up like James Posey did in the Finals last year. I do watch the games and this is what I've more or less observed. You still didn't answer my question, but let me rephrase so it doesn't touch a nerve since you seem to be sensitive about this issue: Please tell us how Battier is responsible for the team scoring more when he is out on the court?
