I'm rooting for Strake all the way. They're ranked 7th in the nation by ESPN. They better win state or I'll be pissed.

They were pretty good last year..this year is the best year by far,for Strake
...i don't know why they are considered in 5A, because they only have about 900-1000 students. To be in 5A, i think you need 1,985 students.

Anyone know where the Pflugerville game will be played? Looked online and can't find it so far. Also anyone know of any games coming up in the Austin area (doesn't have to be 5A)?

I went to watch Yates tonight. That press is legit...but their halfcourt offense makes JVG teams look creative.

The reason SJ is 5A is because it's an all-boys school. The size of schools in 4A and 5A are determined by the count of all students - both boys and girls. As such, you count the enrollment at Strake Jesuit as double, because the number of eligible boys athletes is nearly the same size as a 5A school. If you assume that a school with 2000 students has a roughly 50% distribution of boys and girls, you end up with 1000 boys. It's been a few years since I worked at Strake, but I imagine enrollment is around 900 now. Double that, and you've got 1800 -- I don't know what the specific number for 5A is, but that's why you end up with SJ playing in a conference with larger schools.

They are in 5-A because they are essentially a private school playing with public schools. It is part of the UIL rules for allowing them to enter. Because the UIL cannot enforce boundaries with the private schools and because they have to essentially recruit all their students, they have to be classified as a 5-A. They have a distinct advantage over other schools their size because the public schools are bound by the district zoning rules mandated by the UIL. The UIL cannot force that on the private schools because they don't have an attendance zone. Strake and Dallas Jesuit are currently the only private school members, but recently Cornerstone has been trying to get in. Strake is in because they are too big for TAAPS and since the TCIL folded they had no place to go. Cornerstone is trying to get in under the same technicalities, but with on emajor difference. They are not too big for TAAPS, they were instead kicked out of TAAPS for several recruiting violations and accusations of providing improper room, board and other things to athletes.

    edit:

I knew there was more to it but couldn't remember exactly what. Vengeance is right.

    Lobos, Crusaders to clash
Rivals to meet with state berth going to winner

Strake Jesuit's Joey Brooks scored 20 points as Strake improved to 36-0 after beating Elkins.

Chavez and Strake Jesuit have a little bit of history.

Last season, the two met in the area round of the playoffs and Chavez went into Strake Jesuit’s gym and came away with a dramatic, come-from-behind 85-79 victory — a game the Lobos remember well and the Crusaders would like to forget.

Today, they’ll meet again for the first time since that fateful Friday night, but this time there’s a whole lot more on the line.

Chavez, a 54-53 winner over Hightower and Strake Jesuit, a 56-46 winner over Elkins, will play for the Class 5A Region III championship and a berth in the state tournament at 2 p.m. today at the Campbell Center.

“We’re looking forward to this rematch,” Chavez coach Kevin Pullum said. “Destiny has put us here and we feel like we’re the team to be feared.”

Pullum has reason to be confident, as the Lobos (26-9) have knocked off three district champions to reach this point (Seven Lakes, Kingwood and Hightower) and have traveled one of Region III-5A’s toughest roads.

Undefeated Strake Jesuit (36-0), the state’s No. 1 team, is leaving the past in the past and focusing on earning its first state tournament berth.

“Last year is last year,” Strake Jesuit coach Wayne Jones said. “We feel like we’ve already exorcised those demons (by getting past the area round). We’re going to try and come in here and get to the state tournament.”

Strake Jesuit had one of its toughest battles all year on Friday, as Elkins (24-14) tested the Crusaders’ physical and mental toughness. The chippy play warranted a technical foul from each side but Jones told his team at halftime to stay composed and they did.

Their 12-2 run in the final five minutes of the third quarter turned a back-and-forth affair into a game the Crusaders could control the rest of the way.

“Defense is our calling card,” Strake Jesuit forward Joey Brooks said. “We’ve done that well all year.”

Tim Frazier led the way with 23 points and six rebounds, while Brooks added 20.

The Lobos were tested as well, but came up with all the big plays in the final minutes to edge Hightower (28-10).

Trailing 51-50 with one minute left in the game, forward Eze Akwari (12 points) came up with the biggest play of the night, tipping a pass by Hightower guard Ryan Holland, catching his own tip and sprinting downcourt for an uncontested layup and a 52-51 lead.

The Chavez pressure then forced another turnover on Hightower’s next possession and two free throws by Robert Martinez (16 points) extended the lead to 54-51. Hightower guard Daryell Taylor missed a last-second 3-point attempt and forward Eric Moreland tipped it in as time expired.

Senior guard Jamal Fenton led Chavez with 21 points.

Just got back from it . . . incredible game, fantastic finish. Chavez gave SJ all it could handle, and then some. Strake didn't guard the 3 point line, and Chavez was shooting very well from outside. Strake Jesuit won 59-58, and it was close all the way to the final second -- great game played by both teams, and a nailbiter all the way through.

I wish Jamal wouldve at least got a shot off. Im talked to him after the game and told him to keep his head up. He'll be playing for the Lobos next year but it will be New Mexico instead of Chavez :( . These Chavez boys made history tonight and should be proud of themselves . SJ played a good game, they really used there size against the smaller Chavez the right way.

My school is going to the 3A Tourney. Not sure If I am going, my wife's birthday is Friday. If they win Thursday I may make an early trip in Saturday if I can.
