sorry i know this has been posted before but the search is disabled (maybe its just for me? subtle reminder from Clutch to re-tip the jar?)

but i just got a new laptop and after spending an hour uninstalling all the crap that came with it (i swear i hate how they pack that in with crap) i get to add in my stuff

    any recommendations for virus/spyware software?

so far i just installed the basics:

    office suite
    itunes
    video/audio codecs
    adobe flash and reader
    mozilla
    pcanywhere
    adware

the laptop came with mcafee which i dont mind but i dont like since it takes up a lot of resources.

right now i have a license for eset antivirus through work i can throw on there.

    any recommendations?

Klite Codec Pack for all your video\audio stuff

I use free avira antivir anti virus, takes very little resources and actually catches stuff every once in a while. I use comodo firewall, its rated pretty highly, but its not all that user friendly(I think it is, but casual PC users might have a little trouble with it).

CCleaner is a pretty useful program, that cleans out your digital garbage such as your registry and temporary files.

I never really found much use for spywayre\malware programs since I get all my p*rn from streaming sites or secure locations(ie the actual site and no i dont pay)

If you're not happy with Crapafee, use Avira - the free version's scan engine is better than just about every "for-pay" scanners and it's probably the best free scanner out there right now. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of a Norton, but then the lack of bells and whistles won't hang your system up, either. Eset is a good scanner and I used to use it, but Avira is just as good, if not better. I don't think Crapafee's scanning engine is as good as it used to be from AV scanning results I've been reading about the past few months.

    Mozilla Firefox
Mozilla Thunderbird (all your email accounts in one spot)
Pidgin (all your instant messengers in one spot)
VLC Media Player (plays pretty much everything and does it well)
    InfraRecorder (free burning software)
AVG virus (free virus protection if you dont have any)
    Winrar
    uTorrent or Vuze
Foxit Reader (free PDF editor and viewer, acrobat can't edit so I prefer foxit)
Double Vision (watch streaming videos and do work at the same time)
Open Office (as a free MS Suite alternate)
GIMP (free image and photo editor, think Photoshop but free)
    FileZilla (free ftp client)
Quicken is a must have for me even though it's not free it's great for budget balancing.
Orb (so you can get to your files from any place)

I forgot to mention Daemon Tools Lite for drive emulation.

    Spybot.

Also, pretty sure you mean "adAware," not adware. Adware is what you're trying to remove...
