Could someone be a "selfish" player and get assists?

If you saw a lot of a young Steve Francis driving and kicking the ball out to the perimeter, you were watching in a parallel universe. He'd routinely attack the rim with reckless abandon and try to score over 3 waiting defenders.

That's an absolute fact and it's why he's out of the league at a relatively young age.

Francis wasn't as bad as Iverson, but he was "ran in the same crowd".

do you not remember who his team mates were?? yeah id try dunking on everyone too if the other option consisted of passing to Mo Taylor, Carlos Rogers, Glen Rice, or anyone not named Cuttino.

Dude you obviously hate mcgrady, but thats ok and understandable. However, to blame him for all the things in this list is not really fair. You can say anything anyone does is selfish unless you are doing something to your own detriment that gives you no satisfaction for someone else. He left Toronto to make his own name, not be a sidekick. He gave up on the magic because it was obvious (after many failed Grant Hill comeback attempts) that the organization had given up with their roster. He went out year after year in Orl and did everything and anything to try and win. With the rockets its hard to talk about his 'personal reasons' because none of us really know what was going on there. It was obvious he was a different player/person during that time in his life. The only time I can think of Mcgrady being truly selfish has been this year and only in the way he went about the microfracture thing. Other than that hes done nothing to warrant the hatred here. Hes not a Marbury thats for sure. Hes basically a Kobe in attitude but not talent/work ethic.

Oh and the reason its easy to say Hakeem was selfish 'for the team' was because we won. You forget that Hakeem demanded a trade, would routinely get in fights in games, and was even thrown out of a WCF game against the Lakers. Aren't those things insanely selfish to according to your logic?? (im the biggest dream fan there is btw, but just used him to make a point)

So is Lebron selfish? He is another guy that has to have the ball in his hands and he makes plays for others, as opposed to them making plays for Lebron.

    Of course.

Wilt was upset because writers kept writing that he was too selfish. So, he went out and led the league in assists just to show he could.

He never came close to that number again.

You know it's kind of funny when people bring up T-mac leaving Toronto as selfish.

Considering he signed to a team with Grant Hill who was a superstar and they were trying to get Tim Duncan. Basically means if everything went how Orlando wanted it to, Tracy would have been the 3rd guy on that team.

The way how "assists" are counted in basketball isn't exactly indicative of how a player plays the game.

As Morey said, the guy who invented the box score categories ought to be shot.

The reason Gundy was brought in to coach was because Francis was not throwing the ball down to Yao enough. I doubt Gundy came on board so that Francis could be taught to pass to Taylor, Rogers and Glen Rice.

You are really reaching when trying to defend Francis and his ball hogging mania.

    LOL. Selfishness.

By this logic, Garnett should have taken 3-4 seasons off at least. Not being happy with management and demanding a trade is one thing, refusing to play for an entire season is entirely different thing.

Personal reasons to quit on the team for an entire season? Sounds like...ahem...selfishness.

Microfacture thing...the refusal to move the ball around thing....the refusal to play defense thing...coming to play out of shape thing...

Microfacture was just the icing on the cake.

    Lowerrrring expectations.

If Hakeem gave up for entire seasons and took years off, you bet I would call him selfish. Demanding a trade because management is not doing enough is fine. Several players have done it. Had McGrady demanded a trade because Rockets were not doing enough to win, I would have supported him. But he cant even make that claim.

Now you are really reaching. But I will play. I would kill for Yao and Mcgrady to have this kind of passion and fire. The incident you're talking about is Rambis and Lakers purposely trying to take Hakeem out because he was hurting them inside. When Josh Howard stepped on Yao in playoffs, you had a laughing McGrady keeping a timid Yao in check. Bob Sura was needed for retaliation.

No matter how much how you cut, slice, dice it....

Tracy McGrady has given up on his team for 3 seasons and has gone on to collect paycheck for all 3. With the microfacture surgery, we are looking at No.4 next year.

    That is nothing but selfishness.

Welcome to shooting guards. We are glad you understand the position. At this time, I shall begin counting the number of times I've heard Rockets players/coaches/management say that is/was/will be what is expected of McGrady. It is often set up with the phrase "crunch time", "clutch time", "when the game is on the line", or "go-to-man".

Ain't a damned thing wrong with being a selfish player if you are a blue chip scorer. That fills a role. Whether McGrady has lived up or down to that role is still open for interpretation, and I'm not defending him in any way. I'm just pointing out to this thread that you need guys who want the damned ball when the time is running down. Case in point? Look at some of the latest Rockets 4th quarters.

There's one thing about being selfish, there's an entirely bigger problem when your ladies are all too scared to shoot. Yao should wear a dress sometimes he's so damned passive, and STILL has to be reminded to be aggressive. I mean, honestly, why the hell are we still reminding Yao to be aggressive? Is the learning curve really a decade long?

That said, I don't really understand the OP's title for this thread. What exactly is wrong with being a selfish player if you get crap done? The only thing that matters is the final score, who really cares how you get there?

    Hoops ain't a soap opera.

Guy? (I assume) What exactly is wrong with being selfish? The best players in NBA history were EASILY accused of being selfish? It was their ROLE.

Selfish gets crap done and wins championships. Jordan, Bird, Kobe, etc. These guys take the game over and dominate. That isn't being selfish, it's using your God-given talent to flat out get r done.

If you're bothered by guys being selfish, you may want to tune in to some WNBA action or play some patty-cake or something. NBA basketball may not be your game.

48 minutes is neither "crunch time" nor "clutch time" (unless of course we are talking deep into playoffs which McGrady has never sniffed). When the game is on the line, he should be the one holding the ball. However, that does not mean he cannot play within a team concept for the first 3 quarters and let the plays run thru other players.

Shooting guards can also shoot when plays are set up for them. Nothing wrong with running thru couple of screens and letting the ball come to you to get a shot off. Mr. McGrady though has to have the ball in his hands and initate everything.

Just because you play the shooting guard, does not give you green light to hog the ball. Nice try.

The irony of this statement after attempting to defend McGrady is NOT to be missed.

Did you even read my posts earlier explaining between the two types of selfishness??

I clearly explained I only wish McGrady had the right kind of selfishness. At this point it is a joke to compare him to all time greats. Its embarrassing.

BTW, please stop hanging out with Von Wafer.

Your whole premise of 2 kinds of selfish is so vague and subjective that it cannot be debated to any kind of finality. But what truly makes no sense is that because of the microfracture surgery, Mcgrady is being selfish and missing next year. Brilliant.

Missing seasons is not out of the ordinary for McGrady. I am not sure why it makes no sense considering next year will be #4.

Why would he have any problem collecting free paychecks now, when he has done it several times in the past?

What was the injury in Orlando? Hurt feelings because of the GM?

What was the injury when he gave up on the season for "personal reasons"?

As for this season, you yourself admitted to his micro fracture sham, so I am not even going to go there.

Just because he posted some games for the year does not mean he came in to play. Anyone who watched the games could tell McGrady never came to play this year even though the scorecard would have his name. Same for the other 2 seasons.

Zboy, I know u hate tracy and that's cool, but if he's such a quitter, why didn't he do it the last 2 yrs? I guess having microfracture is such a routine surgery, that was his out, right? I'll u what, next time u sprain something in ur lower body, I have a pro workout program and I'll cut it to 25% and I want to see how fluid u would be. I'm not taking up for tracy, but he shouldve sat out till he was 100% vs playing injured. If he had done that, he wouldve been called a quitter if the team suffered. Either way, he was screwed to guys like u,dd, antisonic and others.
