http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7917295.stm US prosecutors have released video footage of a sheriff's deputy striking a 15-year-old girl and throwing her onto a cell floor. The video is evidence in the case against Washington state Deputy Paul Schene, accused of using excessive force against the girl in November. The incident began after the girl was arrested in a car theft inquiry. Footage shows the deputy lunge at the girl after she kicks one of her shoes towards him at SeaTac City Hall. "We believe this case is beyond just police misconduct, it's criminal misconduct," King County Prosecutor Daniel Satterberg said. "This is clearly excessive force." Mr Schene, 31, pleaded not guilty to fourth-degree assault on Thursday. The second officer shown in the video was a trainee at the time and is not under investigation. The Associated Press news agency said that according to court documents, the girl complained of breathing problems after the incident and medics were called to check her. Mr Schene's lawyers had asked the judge not to release the video, arguing that it would inflame public opinion and prejudice the deputy's right to a fair trial. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Look at the tough cop beating up a 15 year-old girl! She assaulted him by kicking her shoes at his ankles, so clearly the assault was warranted. The tough cop in question, deputy Paul Schene, has been charged with a misdemeanor, fourth-degree assault in the case - and he's already plead not guilty. The man should be charged with felony assault. And crooked cops have been using the 'video doesn't show everything' defense since the Rodney King beating. In this case, as in most others, it shows enough. A little girl kicked a pair of shoes at the big tough policeman, Deputy Paul Schene, and so he proceeded to beat the living **** out of her, along with a few extra punches to the head after he handcuffed her. Isn't it cute that they initially charged her with felony assault before dropping the charge? How clever ... maybe it makes the fact that Deputy Paul Schene is only charged with a misdemeanor more acceptable. Oh, and for those who will inevitably talk about how there are some golly-gee great cops and you know them and they're really cool blah, blah, blah ... fine. Is Deputy Paul Schene your buddy? Deep down, is he a really cool guy? Here's the email address for the King County prosecutor's office: Prosecuting.Attorney@kingcounty.gov And here's the list of phone numbers: http://www.kingcounty.gov/Prosecutor/contactus.aspx Ask that they at least attempt to charge him with 2nd degree assault. This man should never be allowed to wear a badge again.
More than likely she was probably a citizen who broke the law many times and is probably a waste of society's tax dollars. You don't see Shane Battier getting beat up by the cops. They beat up people with many prior convictions and either way society as a whole is probably better with her beaten up. Liberals love to keep our streets littered with trash. Law abiding citizens must stop paying for the scum of society to be free. Freedom is a right you earn, not a privilege of being born, you must show your worthy of being kept among people or get beaten up..
lol.. SHE is a waste of tax dollars? Your taxes go towards paying the salaries of the same guys that beat up defenseless kids. Go back to sleep.
The cop completely overreacted and pummeled the girl. He should be locked up for years. That was insane.
This is pretty weak. It seems that somebody hates that officer, and sent the tape in. In Texas, our juvenile delinquents are getting abused much worse than that. There was a story in the chronicle, that mentioned there were hundreds cases of abuse every year. These cases are much worse including sexual abuse of boys and girls at even younger ages and from all types of employees not just a cop.
I hate stories like this. Makes me so mad. And cops get all sensitive about how maligned they are... Boo-****ing-hoo. Police your own, douchebags.
Why is it .. . that if you have a badge . . . everything is a lesser crime? You can rape kill and murder and folx see it as less than if a common person did it? Why do Police Officers get so much leeway, latitude and benefit of the doubt that we cannot afford anyone else in out society? Rocket River Should we not all be considered Equal?
Good news. I think all the attention that this has been getting on the internet has had some influence. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/402103_schene04.html Federal prosecutors investigating deputy Civil rights inquiry follows taped beating Last updated March 3, 2009 10:49 p.m. PT By PAUL SHUKOVSKY AND LEWIS KAMB P-I REPORTERS Federal prosecutors have launched a civil rights investigation of a King County sheriff's deputy who was shown on a videotape beating a 15-year-old girl in a holding cell after she kicked a tennis shoe at his legs. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kelly Harris said the release Friday of a video that shows the November beating prompted prosecutors to launch the inquiry. "It (the video) definitely drives home the fact that we need to look at it," he said. The video shows Deputy Paul Schene rushing into the cell and slamming Malika Calhoun against the wall, throwing her facedown to the floor and punching her before lifting her to her feet by her hair and leading her out of the cell. If Schene is prosecuted and found guilty of depriving Calhoun of her civil rights while acting in his official capacity, he could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, Harris said. Schene and a rookie deputy who was present during the beating, Travis Brunner, asserted in a report that the tennis shoe -- seen in the video flying off the girl's foot -- struck Schene's shin and caused "bruising, bleeding and pain." They sought third-degree assault charges against the teenager. Instead Schene, 31, is facing a misdemeanor assault charge and is on administrative leave. He pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Sheriff's Office is conducting an internal investigation of the incident, which could result in disciplinary actions separate from any criminal sanctions. Harris wouldn't comment on whether Brunner also is the subject of the federal civil rights investigation. Calhoun was arrested in November on an auto theft charge, which is being processed in King County Juvenile Court. FBI Special Agent Robbie Burroughs said the bureau has opened a preliminary inquiry into the incident. "We will gather the basic facts of the incident and forward it to the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice," she said. Schene is among more than a half-dozen King County sheriff's deputies who have been federally investigated for excessive force and other issues in recent years. Several of those inquiries were opened after the Seattle P-I exposed details about misconduct allegations against the officers. Across the country, the FBI has pursued fewer such investigations of alleged police wrongdoing because the Bush administration transferred thousands of agents to counterterrorism duties. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Well, that last line is rather interesting.
