He normally would just tell the reporter that he can be the player that makes the team contenders, but he was content that if his career was over now, he'd be happy.

plus he got replaced by Marbury..

    that means its over.

I just want to point out that this is EXACTLY what happened to the Rockets when they went from CHOKE CITY to CLUTCH CITY !!

Choking big leads in the 4th quarter is a Rocket's tradition.

Learning from it, has not been.....in the Tmac era...but he is gone now, so....

Yup. Hope this current crop of players figure it out too. I'm hoping that these guys have the will in them to not let leads slip like those early teams.

Agreed it's time for him to hang it up. If you watched him last year as a Celtic he was a complete chucker. There's not many teams that will allow that sort of thing. He's right -- came in as a champ, left as a champ. Time to pursue a coaching and/or broadcasting career rather than risk leaving with a bad taste in your mouth.

Guys, do you realize what this means? That's the last Rocket from the championship teams, basically announcing his retirement, assuming Horry is done. A little sad, and a little strange, hmm?

Sam throwing his arms around in celebration, and me imitating him as I celebrated alongside him, is one of my earliest childhood memories. Thanks for the spunk, Sam.

I dont see the correct championship situation out there for Sam. Boston, LA, Cleveland, Spurs- Boston was the best bet out of those and thats the team he was just on. Only Popovich on the Spurs would have the gumption to bring him in just because. Or Les Alexander for a marketing move and good luck charm. He'd have to convince himself one of the darkhouse contenders were actually legitimate like Utah or the Hornets. I dont see any of those teams with any urgency to acquire him. Horry's prospects are even more dim.

We'll know after the season if the last 2 Clutch City Champs holdovers play another game...but this year being the 15th anniversary of the 1st championship, why not both of them officially go out on a nice round commerative number

    ;)

but since he's a real t-mac hater he flips the picture so it fits his hate.

in reality though this has obviously nothing to do with t-mac. if anything t-mac is (or was) the reason stuff like this didn't happen on a regular basis.

it's on yao. really, i mean i love yao, but it's his inabilty to overcome fronting defenses that's often the main cause for blowing big leads. he needs to be aggressive and he needs to have a player who can make good entry passes and with whom he's comfortable with. but even then it's hard to get him the ball. but if he's not aggressive enough or is surrounded by players who can only make hesitation bounce passes that are pretty much off target most of the time it's really over.

concerning sam: i'm happy for him. he had a great career and it's the perfect time to say good bye. he should enjoy retirement for a while because somehow i have a bad feeling about him being a coach. but hopefully it works out for him.

The Yao era is still ongoing, the Tmac era is over.

This is pure ignorance, and shows a severe lack of understanding of the game of basketball.

GRF to Yao "Come on Yao, sure you have a guy in front of you and behind you, but beat them anyway."

    SHEESH !

Two guys guarding Yao, it is up to his TEAMATES to take advantage. I am looking forward to this team actually getting GOOD at taking advantage of that situation, because the last few have had one guy thinking he could do it himself.

Great thread tinman, pristinely managed as always.

Sammy Cassell is awesome, indeed the last of the Rockets Championship teams to retire. My g/f and snuck into practice in 1996 to honor him with a full size Rice-Krispy treat Larry O Brien trophy. We left it in his locker along with a note that maybe he should not eat it, but that we thought he'd agree that it looked amazingly life like. It did.

We salute you, Sam Cassell, you are the best. Thanks for all the great memories, basketball and personality.

    XTRA FOR XPERTS:
What was the name of Sam Cassell and Mario Elie's business venture?
    Where was it?
    What did it sell?

it was a shoe place, and that barely lasted a year IIRC, it was a joint store with Mario Elie called "Samario's" was at the Galleria, opened around 95/96ish

i believe he had a joint business with Steve Francis called "We R One" but I think they shut down also, their business office was right by my work, and the sign isn't up anymore, so I assumed they are not there anymore.

    Wow,
another rookie who can't read, average SAT scores of the clutchfans drops significantly.

who is jason hart? how many playoff games has he had?
did he ever play for the Rockets?

    Sam Cassell's career > Tmac's career.

    Winner > Loser

what is your obessession with Sam? When he was on the rockets i cheered for him. but after that he has really done nothing for Houston.. if he didnt have Hakeem he would have been forgotten in this league already.

Saying Sam is greater than Tmac is very subjective. . yes he won. but he won cuz of the dream.. . even with Tmacs lazy ass defense u put tmac with the dream and the championship rockets team. he would have won too . . sam was a roll player.. while Tmac is suppose to be a super star.. just didnt quite work out for him though.

anyways would u stop flaming or attacking others directly.. true some people might say stupid statements but it doesnt call for personal attacks and calling people stupid.. calm down man.. .

on a side note .. do you live in LA? and went to some of the Rocket Laker games?

This dude is the last of the Championship Rockets. That may mean nothing to you, but it means something to some of us. To some an old Bill Russell who's about to retire is just some old guy, to others he was the last of a great generation.

This is thread is about Sam pretty much retiring. I notice some people don't even have the patience to read to a WHOLE THREE SENTENCES.

When does "Thanks Sam" mean "We're signing SAM CASSELL?"

Flame them? I'll roast them like rotisserie chickens. What I am suppose to call these idiots? smart people? no. they're idiots.

No, I don't live in LA. I go there once in awhile though.
