All of a sudden, my computer is having trouble staying connected to Facebook chat, and now whenever I use any search engine, when I click on a link in the results, it gets redirected to a totally different page....

I just downloaded the latest version of Norton Antivirus....let's see if this takes care of it. I hope so.....

Yeah sounds like spyware. I'd try spybot + adaware.

OK, I'm worried as hell now.

I downloaded and purchased the latest versions of registry mechanic and it's spyware software spyware doctor.

Ran full scans with each...system found >200 infections.

Fixed them all...then went to google to do a test search.

The same damn thing is happening...I type in a search term, get the results, click on one of the results, and the system redirects me (through something caled FindFebruary...WTF is that?) to websites that have nothing to do with the results...the US Marines website, shopping websites, etc.

How the hell can I fix this?????

Sounds like one of those "browser helper" problems. Go to "Add/Delete Programs" and see if there is a program in there that is not supposed to be.

Also, you could roll back your computer's registry to a time in which you know it was right.

It's a b**** to fix when your browser gets hijacked. Too much p*rn man. Too much p*rn :D

    Download malwarebytes and then combofix.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php (it says free trial on the site, i've been using it for quite a while and i haven't had to pay yet)

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

99% chance that the above combo fixes it. I've ran it on my machine and a few other machines that were hopeless with redirects to other pages and just spyware/malware everywhere.

Since you've run a few programs already, no need to probably download anymore spyware tools at this point.

Well, I finally fixed this shizznit. I HATE GETTING JACKED UP LIKE THAT!!!!

What fixed it was a combination of Malwarebytes and PC Tools' spyware doctor. Then, to top it all off, Norton Antivirus and Malwarebytes were conflicting with each other. I went into the owner profile (I have my own, which is the one I use) and got rid of Norton. I also got rid of Mozilla Firefox in the process...back to using IE again, for now anyway.

Thanks for all the tips guys. I appreciate it. There is a vast wealth of information on the ClutchFans BBS website.

And yes...I will be cutting down on the p*rn... ;) :D

    Thanks for the tip..... ;)

One final note...is there anyone other than me who thinks that Norton Antivirus does more harm to your computer than good? In my humble opinion, Norton freaking sucks large purple donkey balls. It seems to conflict with spyware killing software, and generally slow your PCs performance way down while not really doing much to counteract viruses.

    Thoughts?

You should never have two Antivirus programs running at the same time (i.e. McAfee and Norton). They will always conflict.

Norton is a huge and bloated program though... I found it to be more of a hassle than useful.

Just ease off on the (cough)..."internet research" you have been doing and you should be fine as far as viruses go.

    +1

IN my experience, Norton is too bloated, you could use multiple utilities for AV, spyware and such that still doesnt take up the resources that NORton or mcafee does.

try system restore to the earliest date first before you try anything.. it's under program files -> accessories -> system tools. it won't erase your documents.

don't ever purchase anti virus, or download unproven free software...

often these 'Free' anti virus software literally installs some crap onto your computer while it's scanning for malware, then instructs you to purchase the full version of their product, biggest fking scam ever

    1. backup your important files, salvage ONLY the important stuff
    2. format hd

pro tip: don't visit too many p*rn sites
