They tried to keep this thing from leaking, a valiant effort to be sure, but an Australian site started selling it early. http://www.getmusic.com.au/discography/detail.aspx?pid=51468&aid=15106 So I've got it, I guess email me if you want to check it out.
I haven't listened to it all yet. From what I've heard, I like it so far as an album over the previous 2, but my gut is telling me it won't sell as well as the last two albums. The first single hasn't caught people's attention and I think casual fans bought the last two albums based on the first singles (Beautiful Day & Vertigo). It's the 6th song in the album and sounds kinda out of place, it's almost like an intermission. There are some really good songs though. The first 2 songs on the album are like reminders of their best work from previous eras. The first one, No Line On The Horizon sounds like it came from Achtung/Zoorapa era, the 2nd one, Magnificent has a classic U2 rif from the 80s.
My cable went down just as I replied earlier. I was trying to email you... Then "poof." I'm on my phone, so if you could send me deets through the board mail... tia. EDIT: you read my mind- thx
On a similar note, the new Junior Boys album leaked. So did Beirut, Alela Diane and Andrew Bird in the past 10 days. These are must haves of 2009. I'm sure Moes is going to download it ASAP.
Just heard Get On Your Boots. Very different for U2. I wasn't sure if that was The Edge playing guitar or Tom Morello. Nice to hear some heavy distortion from Edge. I think even the bass was distorted at one point.
I'm only 3 songs in but I'm loving this. So atmospheric. Haven't heard Clayton's bass so fat and rich like this in like...forever...Feels like the first time I heard Achtung...
See, but people said All That You Can't Leave Behind was "throwbackish" or a similar adjective. To me, it's almost like a "best of" album. Their are touches of everything U2 has done well in the last 30 years. I haven't felt compelled to skip any songs on this album....well maybe I'll Go Crazy because it sounds like it could have fit on either of the last 2 albums. These songs are gonna sound great live. They are still having trouble with the Get On Your Boots, Bono is probably too old to be singing what has turned out to be the fastest song U2 has ever recorded. Today in France they played Breathe Live on a tv show, thanks be to Youtube.
U2 is the one of those bands I find amazing when I watch them on any Live DVD and yet find very average on any studio produced project I listen to. Why is this? It's kind of annoying. See Incubus and DMB for other examples.
you should listen to incubus' science and enjoy. great great studio albums. it is why i kind of picked my name for this site and email etc. most of there stuff after that sucks though.
i absolutely love this album and i know chievous minnifield agrees. i love the last two, but they took a while to grow on me. this one had me from track one, listen one.
Always look forward to every U2 album-all of them are great or very good (except Zooropa- what happened with that one?). There is no doubt that Achtung Baby is one of the 5-10 best albums ever, of all time, period.
U2 will be on Letterman all week this week and they are playing a not so secret gig at Fordham University, though it may only be open to students and faculty with proper ID. Potential "secret" show in Boston as well. Also, according to RS the new tour is going to be set up for stadiums with the idea of trying to keep ticket prices down.
Can't find the part in RS I was reading yesterday, but Bono said they will also release a smaller more contemplative album of stuff recording during NLOTH by year's end...here's hoping. I think the groundbreaking classic that U2 can release will be when they go small and quiet. BTW this album is ok, better than the last, probably = ATYCLB. No big "grab ya singles" like Beautiful Day, but a grower. I'm on my 3rd listen.
