Wife just got a new car and I want to get her an extended warranty.

I'm trying to decided if I should get it through the dealership or go through an online service like Carchex or Warranty Direct. Anybody have any experience with the online guys? They are about 100 dollars cheaper and "seem" to offer better coverage, but they are an online deal so it's tough to say.

Any insight from anyone with knowledge on the matter would be appreciated.

Car is a VW Jetta Wolfsburg.

I haven't had any personal experience with non-manufacturer extended warranties. That being said, if the savings is "only" $100, I'd go with the manufacturer. At the very least, there won't be a question about them honoring their own warranty.

Just because a warranty is through the dealership does not mean it is a manufacturer warranty.

I had good experience in the past with a Warranty Direct on my Audi, but I did not buy until the factory warranty was almost expired. It always took care of all repairs without problems and I spent less on the warranty than Warranty Direct did on my car.

This is what I'm looking to hear.

Warranty Direct has a 100 thousand mile warranty that's comparable in price to VW's 70 thousand mile warranty and "claims" to be the same coverage, which is nearly bumper to bumper, minus the usual exclusions. Of course the dealership is trying to convince me that online warranty companies are scams, so I need to make sure they are going to work out.

FYI : you can deal on warranties. Try out of state dealers. I, personally, would never buy a warranty that isn't a manufacturer's extended warranty (or through them). All these others can take your money and go belly-up with no notice.

I got a 100k manufacturer's extended warranty on a new car for around $800-$900 when most dealers were selling it for around $1500 simply by calling an out-of-state dealer (and reading car forums).

Go to a forum that deals with your car and ask about extended warranties and see if there are deals people are getting.
