If you could assign a mentor for any particular player what player would get what mentor and why? With Aaron Brooks newly defined role of starting point guard I thought he is one player I would like to see get a mentor.

I thought about this one a while and initially thought I would like to see Calvin Murphy mentor Aaron Brooks because both are undersized for the NBA and Calvin is a Hall of Famer. But after thinking about it, for those that saw Calvin play know that he usually played shooting guard and not point guard. Calvin was great at the mid range game did not mind sacrificing his body to go hard to the rim. But for a floor general I have never seen a better point guard on the Rockets than John Lucas. John new how to run a team better than anyone and if not for him getting kicked off the team in 86 I still think the Rockets would have won the Championship that year. John Lucas was a true point guard and a Hall of Famer had he stayed clean. He was just as good a passer as Jason Kidd and had a better shot.

If I we could get Aaron Brooks to learn how to run the point like John Lucas then no player would benefit more than Yao Ming and the Rockets would be legit contenders with or with out Tracy McLady.

Some other random thoughts on mentors:

    Otis Thorpe for Louis Scola
    Clyde Drexler for Von Wafer

Wow, those are three very good comparisons. I'm struggling to come up with any better than that.

I'd like Moses to teach Yao about tenacity around the basket and on the boards.

I'd like Rick Barry to teach Chuck to shoot those free throws under-handed (just for the sheer comedy that's sure to come from it).

sam cassell mentor brooks and lowry? wasnt he expected to be cut from some where? i think he makes a good coach one day. he makes good decisions as a point guard and he was part of the championship team back in 94.

n of cos most fans here would love Dream to mentor Yao but too bad Dream cant do it due to his obligations.

but john lucas is a really good mentor for our point guards as well. good topic u have brought up about mentoring our point guards, i still feel they are too young to win it all but like Morey mentioned, Boston did well with Rondo.

Assign Reggie Miller to Shane Battier, his shooting has not been consistent, although he has been hot recently. He needs to be more consistent.

I'm a big fan of Moses and think no one ever benifited more from another player than Hakeem did playing with Moses at Fonde.

Having said that I always thought Kareem would have been more benificial to Yao. Yao already has a nice hook shot that he really uses a lot now but what Kareem did with his was just plain Hall of Fame type stuff. The deadliest offensive shot in the history of the game is still the sky hook from Kareem.

The thing I just want to add to that is that Kareem was really great at passing out of the double teams which is one of Yao Mings problems IMO.
