we have to do this. who knows what could happen next year, we might make the playoffs we might not. if we dont(injuries) and were lottery again, memphis has our pick. we have to give torontos pick to memphis. or is that pick lottery protected? if it is, we can keep torontos pick.
I think there are conditions on that pick that, unless Memphis waives them, will preclude giving them the pick this season.
Whether or not we give them the pick this season depends on how well we predict we will do next season. First, we should wait for the lottery before deciding anything, but I think thius is a playof caliber team. Next years pick probably wont be any better than the Toronto pick. I was thinking about . Lets say we got the #1 next year. Could we trade it for the #15 and something else, then give the #15 pick to Memphis and pick up a good player.
i believe the pick has to be within two of our own. i'm sure that condition is on pretty much all trades or everyone would simply do what you described.
Either our pick, a pick within two of our own, or a top 15 pick. The Toronto pick can be given to satisfy the debt since it's 15, just a question of whether or not the Rocks will send it or not.
i knew i shouldn't have tried to answer the question. but wait, are you saying we can do what Hydra said? somehow that just doesn't seem like it would be allowed by memphis.
Wouldn't it revert to Memphis to control on the day after this draft because next year is the deadline. I like your idea but I doubt we would have control because it has to go to them...
I think we should give it up. I don't see that this draft is deep with quality players. And I'd like to be wrong, but I think we are lotto bound next year as well and I'd hate to give up our pick.
I'd only keep it if we can use it to trade up a few spots to get a backup center (Marcus/Borchart). Otherwise, the gamble is too great; we have to send it. The tough part is I bet there is a deadline to ship it, so we could not wait until draft day when most deals get done, to move up, etc.
JBC is right, there is a deadline to send it (I forget when it is). If we send before the deadline, Memphis must take it. If we wait until after the deadline (like, say, during the draft), Memphis can refuse. And, it would be in their best interest to refuse, imo. So, we'd have to decide well before the draft whether or not to pay. I think it would be possible next year to trade down in order to have a pick for Memphis and another for ourselves. However, what we send them still has to be top-15. And, much like Detroit did to Vancouver last year, they could strike deals with potential partners to not do deals with us. We'd run the risk of not being able to complete a trade. And, when the deadline in 2003 hits, we can no longer do a trade, Memphis takes it. Most teams like to wait until the actual draft to do trades of picks.
If we convey our 15 pick to Memphis, can they in turn use this pick to meet their obligation to Detroit? If Memphis can do this, I think the Rockets may be able to get something in return for conveying the pick this year. I do not think it would be that much, maybe Memphis’ second rounder.
well if it has to be a top 15 pick, and this pick is number 15, what do we have to lose its the best scenario for us. never gamble on next season, i thought we were playoff bound THIS year...
When do we have to let Memphis know whether or not we're giving it to them? I assume we can't just wait to see which players are available at #15.
Vancover had until June 7, 2001 last year to convey their obligation to Detroit (prior to a June 27, 2001 draft). http://216.239.39.100/search?q=cach...ick+++++convey+++draft+++2001+++detroit&hl=en However, I doubt this was a league-wide deadline, but was agreed between the teams when the deal was done. As such, the Rockets could have a different deadline in their agreement with Vancover (now Memphis). Presumably, however, Vancover would have insisted the deadline would be a few weeks before the draft, so that they would have time to work out potential draftees.
I say keep the pick if we think there is a good prospect at #15. If we expect all there is left is a Jason Collier, use it to complete the deal--even better if we could squeeze a current/future extra 2nd rounder for it. But my hunch is this year's draft will be better and deeper than next year's and the Rockets would do at the absolute worse like the 11-12-13 lotto place unless the get another incredible set of injuries, I think I would rather plan to send next year's pick.
Memphis would not be able to to use the pick to pay Detroit. Memphis must send their own pick. It's protected this year (unless they fall 3 spots in the lottery), so it will be next year, no exceptions. Thanks for finding Memphis' deadline, JBC. If you'll recall from the hoopla last year, that deadline was unusually early by industry standards. Houston's deadline to Memphis was a week or 2 later, though I can't remember when.
Let's say the Rockets keep this years #15. Let's say the Rockets are firing on all cylinders next season and replace the TrailBlazers as the 6th playoff seed. This equates to roughly pick 21. For the sake of argument, no one is willing to swap picks to give the Rockets a 15 or better pick. Does any one know what the penalty provision is if the Rockets are unable to deliver a 15 or better pick? I would think that since this trade is basically a legal contract, the lawyers have covered this possibility. But what is it? Juan Valdez... any one??
There are no such provisions for next years pick (sub-15 or our own), only this years. If we don't send them a pick this year next years pick could range from 1 to 29--whatever our own pick ends up being.
