Hey Ikarus. You're an idiot. China does take almost half his money. Its called Chinese taxes. He is paying around 35-42 percent in taxes to his homeland which is why people think he is losing half his check. Next topic. Playing for China. He does have a special release from CBA. He is released from them as long as he plays in the Olympics and comes home every post season to "practice" with his teammates. So you've been enlightened like you asked, feel better?
For some fans with no clue: Wang Zhizhi was asked to train with Chinese national team (with Yao). It was in the summer. He refused and said he wanted to play in the NBA summer league because he thought that would be good for his development in NBA. He was therefore kicked out of national team. Even Kobe and Lebron had to agree by signing a contract to joining the training camp. Wang's behavior is no different from TMAC's me-first crazy show.
Holy crap! I did not know that. Yeah - that's a pretty big no-no right there. He did eventually get back into good graces with them tho, right?
There was a rumor saying that Yao will retire from international games after 2008 summer. But several days later, Yao denied it. It seems you do not follow the story from the beginning to the end or only take what you want to hear.
Which again is why I asked the question. I don't think that is "taking what I want to hear." Look - the fact is that Yao can opt out after next season. Some people question if we should give him the max deal (the answer to that is "yes"), but I'm just saying that I'd like to see him play an entire season after having significant time off.
Give the source of "around 35-42 percent in taxes". Plus another 50% to IRS, ate you saying Yao makes almost nothing from his salary? who is the idiot here? Again, give the source of your claim: the special release. It is easy to make up things. You got to back it up. The truth is that it is up to Yao to decide what game he wants to play. He makes his decision base on the best interest to himself. What would Yao do? You houston fans wouldn't even vote for him to ASG. It is the CHINESE who voted him in. The decisions Yao have made so far are easy, simple, clear and reasonable.
Oh, for pete's sake... I did not start this thread in order to be some big discussion on the intricasies of the Chinese government. I really just want to know if Yao is playing international ball this summer. This is probably a bad time to ask the same question about Scola...
If Yao thinks playing the games are good for him, he will play. I am no Yao. I have no clue. Chinese national team also cherishes Yao. They wouldn't intentionally hurt him. Who would?
I don't know if or how much money China takes from Yao's salary, but if they do, it is not tax unless Yao doesn't pay tax to IRS here. I believe there are tax treaties between US and China to ensure not double taxing.
Oh, I know that they cherish Yao. When my mother went there last summer I asked her if she could find me a Yao jersey - she said they were pretty much on sale the second she got off of the plane. In the industry I work in I deal with Chinese nationals and they love talking Rockets ball and Yao Ming. I know how big of a deal he is worldwide. I know that I'm being selfish as a Rockets fan here, but I'll say it again - I would like to see him play a season with a full offseason of rest. If I offended you, it was not intentional, I hope you realize that.
We all want to see Yao plays a full season well. Winning some international games is important to Chinese basketball development. Kids will never fall in love with games their adult versions fail blatantly. Of course, winning some games is also key to the jobs of the coaches, basketball officials, etc. I guess losers will lose their jobs, no matter where they are. Yao can choose not to play. He can claim he puts his own development in NBA ahead of playing for national team. He can declare he puts Houston franchise first. He has every right to do it and China cannot arrest, assault or harass him. However, Yao is not stupid. That says enough.
From I have read, my take is that Yao will try not to play for CNT. With Olympics over now, it doesn't seem that CNT officials will have many problems with that.
is this you? You get very angry when people bring up communist A$$HOLES from China, kind of scary in my opinion. And you wanted a source, go rent this movie..... It explains Yao's difficult transition to the US and it talks about the pressures that the Chinese government put on him, including financially, idiot.
you can brand people whatever you want. Again, back up your claim that yao has to play tax (~30% ) to Chinese gov. Let;s get that simple fact straight. You are such a liar, no better than dirty commies.
Damn...I wasn't thinking arrest or assault...i was thinking the mother of all guilt trips! I am seeing where you are coming from in regards to Yao and his importance to international competition. There is no doubt that he has led the Chinese national team to international respectablity, and as popular as he is here it doesn't match what he means there. I get that....but I'm still selfish and I think of him as a Rocket first! I do think that raising the Naismith Trophy over his head would go a long way towards inspiring kids in China, tho!
I just realized ikarus, that you said the Chinese Govt. cant do anything to him? How do you even come up with that? You think Obama is gonna protect him cause he plays basketball? YM isn't a American citizen you fool. If China says they want him back for whatever reason, they can say he raped Kobe during the Olympics or he poked someone to death with his chop sticks because they don't like to eat the head. Now mind you if YM applies for citizenship being that he has lived here for awhile is a different topic. I don't think there has ever been a case like this to go off of. Also for you to realize. He was raised through a communist system were they basically trained him his whole life (Red Chinese Athletics??) so they have the idea (and he does too) that they basically own him and if it ever came down to it I don't think our Govt. will try to push and piss off the Communist Govt over a basketball game.
Even while not playing I could see him playing a major role to promote the sport in his home country with promotional appearances and such. Maybe talk to Stern and get some other NBA stars to do appearances with him to raise interest in the game. It would be a good thing. and he'd be resting up!!!
I know he has some houses down here so I don't know if that counts as residency. I know that while in the military no matter where I was (not in the states) I would still be paying state and federal taxes, I didn't pay any European taxes or Japanese taxes. I really doubt that he pays into IRS.
