Brooks is ready for the job. I'm not sure I like the trade but I've been ready for Brooks to get more time and he wasn't going to until Rafer was gone.
Sums it up for me. I made a prediction he would become the starter (which was premature, in hindsight)...I just didn't picture it going down like this.
My guess is Morey doesn't believe the Rockets are contenders with McGrady out and figures we might as well get a clearer picture of what we have (or don't have) in young guys like Brooks, Wafer and Landry. Add Lowry in there, too. I imagine all those guys will start getting more playing time down the stretch.
I have confidence that AB will do just fine as the starter. Adelman's system focuses on ball movement. We don't need someone who holds onto the ball for too long. The PG in this system needs to be able to shoot and drive. Aaron fits the bill well. Also Brooks' ability to be a one man fast break adds a dimension to the team that Rafer would never provide. I think Brooks is ready to take the next step in his career and I look forward to watching him as the starting PG for the Houston Rockets.
I, too don't understand the hate for this deal. Yes, alston runs a team better than brooks or lowry now, but brooks is the better scorer and shooter. Plus now we have two point guards capable of getting in the lane and putting extra pressure on opposing defenses or getting foul calls. alston doesn't do that. And cook is the poor man's charlie V fans were looking to add to the team.
Aaron Brooks is good. He just needs a little more confidence and this faith trade is suppose to help with that.
I don't agree. The Rockets needed to know how ready Brooks was before making a deal like this. Brooks has evidently shown them something they liked over the first 50 games of the season. If they were to make a move like this, I think it was smart for them to wait to mid-season, instead of rushing into it. It's important to keep your options open. In the summer, who were you willing to trade in order to get Cook? The last two trades by Morey have apparently met your approval. Are you any more comfortable with his decision making now?
I do think that Brooks will start playing better and more consistently with more minutes. He's so loaded with energy that when he comes in for a few minutes at a time, he often doesn't get a chance to adjust his energy level to the flow of the game. One thing that would make Brooks' game infinitely more effective is utilizing change of speed. Sometimes he just puts his head down and charges to the basket even when the guy is laying off him. He could become one of the most deceptive players in the league if he masters that skill.
That's an interesting point. It's hard to envision this trade happening with McGrady still around. You don't want to rock things too much with a player like that.
Exactly. The only thing AB0 lacks is experience. And he isn't very good defensively, but he can improve at that as well.
I'd also like to see Aaron used more in pick and roll situations. Off a pick, he has more than enough speed to get to an open spot and shoot from mid-range. And while he isn't the best of passers, I think some of his best passes come in situations where they try to double up on him out on the perimeter. I've seen him make a number of nice passes through double teams to an open Landry when they run pick and rolls together. I think Brooks should also continue to look to penetrate and kick the ball out or drop it off to bigs. He gets in trouble doing that at times but I think he'll improve if he keeps doing it in game situations. He has to learn to keep his dribble going until he sees a pass though. There is no doubt he can get into the paint almost at will. It's all about what he does once he gets there. Our bigs will get used to those drop passes he does in the paint as they play with him more. That kind of play won us the game in Boston.
Yea, this trade is about giving Brooks the keys. I don't think you can quite say "he deserves it", but if he develops further, we'll finally get above average play from that spot. I thought the team played their best basketball with him starting right before Skip came back for the Cleveland loss. Lowry will play 18-20 minutes and he's proven he can do that.
