Pioneer to exit flat TV market, cut 10,000 jobs
By Kiyoshi Takenaka Kiyoshi Takenaka – 1 hr 6 mins ago

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japanese electronics maker Pioneer Corp (6773.T) said it would pull the plug on its loss-making flat TV business and cut an additional 10,000 jobs as it heads for a record $1.4 billion annual loss.

Pioneer, a niche player in the flat TV market and one of the world's largest makers of car electronics, has suffered along with other Japanese electronics companies due to the slowing global economy and strong yen.

The company said it would withdraw from the flat TV business by March 2010 and consider an alliance in optical disks as part of a restructuring that will put greater focus on its car electronics business.

"It is extremely painful to give up a business we have built up as a pioneer in the industry," President Susumu Kotani told a news conference.

"The market's fluctuations have been outside the realm of our expectations and we came to the conclusion that we cannot expect profitability to improve."

Pioneer held a 5.9 percent share in the plasma TV market in the first nine months of 2008, a long way behind Panasonic Corp's (6752.T) 37.2 percent, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's (005930.KS) 22.8 percent and LG Electronics Inc's (066570.KS) 15.5 percent, according to research firm DisplaySearch.

Pioneer said it would cut 6,000 regular employees and 4,000 temporary and contract staff. Those cuts will come on top of the 5,900 jobs already shed between March and December of last year, which brought its global workforce down to 36,900.

The decision to pull out of flat TVs was flagged by the company on Saturday when it said it was weighing various options including all-out withdrawal and termination of in-house TV production.

Pioneer also warned on Thursday that it now expected to post a group net loss of 130 billion yen ($1.44 billion) for the year to March 31, compared with its prior forecast for a loss of 78 billion yen. It cut its sales forecast by 20 percent.

Prior to the announcement, shares of Pioneer closed up 0.6 percent at 178 yen. The benchmark Nikkei average (.N225) lost 3 percent.

They def did make the best plasma. Maybe the best flat screen. Did they even offer affordable low end models? Oh well, only a few people realize how good their TVs were.

What model? Ill tell whats wrong with it. Once I tell you then you will begin to notice it. It will drive you mad for awhile. Then your mind will begin to deal with the nuisance.

Give me the model Ill give you the defect.

its tough to sell pricey plasma TV when the avg customer knows nothing about resolution and Dynex drops a 42 inch for $599 at best buy and you're pioneer is $900

OHHHH the BIG one. I know exactly the one you're talking about. that narrows it down to maybe 300 tvs.

I'm not surprised with this. pioneer tvs have phenomenal quality but why buy a 3.5k plasma when you can get one that is excellent for half that.

Comparing any dlp to a pioneer plasma is like comparing a camry to a ferrari.

    Thats a good set. But...
Does it buzz? Put it on mute, go up to it, see if it buzzes.
When you see a dark scene or background do you see green fuzz? Maybe red fuzz, like dots bouncing? Go up close and see. If you don't then your settings are crushing your blacks BTW.

No wonder the 50 inches Pioneer Kuro dropped from $4000 to $2000 this month.

Still overpriced but they do make the best Plasmas. Best black level and natural colors of any plasmas out there.

Whenever someone asked what was good, was easy to remember Pioneer & Panosonic made the best Plasmas. Not the case anymore

And yeah all the hoopla about finding the best specs, getting the most bang for your buck with HDTVs and 3/4 people still dont care, just go with what they hear is good and whats cheap

I understand that one should use only clean 100% cotton or microfiber cloths to clean a plasm screen and not to use any cleaners with ammonia in them but does someone make a cleaning solution that is safe for plasma screens?

I am not aware of any specific plasma screen cleaning products. One basically does not want to remove the anti-glare coating on the glass.

If that is the only concern then use a lens cloth for a camera or riflescope. That glass has hundreds of dollars worth of coating on a much smaller area.

I'm confused. Who buys a huge TV to sit an inch away from it?
