    1. The biggest mistake was not to sign Derek Fisher in 2004 when he was a free agent. Les was so worried about his money and he is not willing to give a multi-year contract to Derek Fisher in July 2004. Fisher wanted to come to Houston as it was a perfect situation for him. He ended up in Golden state first then was traded to Utah.

Fisher was one of the biggest factors that Houston could not pass Utah in the first round playoff in 2007. Since last year, Fisher has stabilized Lakers' back court and helped lakers again become a top team in the west.

During close-game situation, Fisher is a much better player than Alston, he definitely would help in closing games. Think about the game 7 of the series against Utah when Rox had the home court advantage.

If Fisher is on the Houston team, JVG would still be the coach and Houston would have played at least once in the western conference final.

    2. The second mistake of course is JVG's stubbornness of playing starters and winning a meanless game to lose the lottery pick of Brandon Roy. Houston in that year actually identified Roy as their pick. Roy would help to stabilize Houston's back court tremendously.

Right now, with T-mac's unwinding situation, I do not see any hope of Houston passing the first round in the near future. What a mistake of not signing Derek Fisher! He was actually not that expensive to sign.

your conclusion is not convincing since you're assuming fisher was willing to sign with us as a f/a.

Congrats, you win the award for the most random, meaningless thread award.

Im sure Fisher had everything to do with the steller Lakers team, nothing to do with the MVP and one of the greatest players ever. Fish doesnt have the ball in the 4th quarter bringing it down the court, Kobe does.

And im not really sure how to respond to the "Brandon Roy" comment....

There are few things funnier than when fans misinterpret shrewd managerial decisions as frugality by the owner.

Les was not "worried about his money." Derek Fisher signed for the full MLE (or close to it). It would have been beyond stupid to give him that money when we had just started to learn our lesson from the Mo Taylor/Kelvin Cato era.

and you say Brandon Roy would "stablize the back court"...

how about "STABLIZE THIS ENTIRE TEAM"

I guess we should have forfeited the entire 2003 season also so we could have got Lebron James in that draft...

If you look at Fisher's production and his on-court stabilizing effect, MLE is worth it. Houston would definitely pass the first round for sure. The whole organization will be different.

By the way, at the time, Fisher wanted to come to Houston. It is a perfect situation for him.

actually i kind of agree despite the insignificance of this thread. dfish did express interest and i think he would have been able to run a capable offense with mac and yao. also fisher was a proven commodity that was well worth the money unlike kelvin "i have a career game in the preseason to earn a big contract" cato and mo "i get high, high, high" taylor.

if van gundy hadn't won that game, it doesn't mean we would have automatically had the pick..

    1. Our owner wanting a Suns style team (cause they have had so much success they are in the midst of a firesale)

    2. Stromile Swift

    3. Clyde Drexler (Calvin :( )

    4. Kelvin "foaming dog" Cato

    5. Adelman (kinda goes with 1 but I cannot think of anymore and I wanted to make sure)

But that was the year we got TMAC and we signed Bob Sura who frankly not knowing he would go down with injuries, I liked better at point.

and Fisher has won 3 championships with that Lakers team, so he knows the experience quite a bit, he is worth the MLE. Houston thought he is too expensive. I bet if Houston do it again, they will sign him for sure.

can't say i agree totally, but this is a good list.

les thinks he knows a lot about ball could be big problems. he has to realize he inherited a championship caliber team, not invented it. almost everything after dream and clyde retired was basically a flawed decision (other than drafting yao, which was a no-brainer) - in a hindsight.

fisher>rafer. although i despise his flopping ways, i feel with him and scola we would have 2/3 of the best floppers in the nba in our starting 5! hello to 60 win seasons and playoff success. too bad that was not to be. :(

    1. Not hiring Hakeem as Yao's personal big man coach

2a. Not bringing in the proper talent under JVG. I think if he had the roster we have today things are much different
    2b. Firing JVG

    3. Building to much luxary into the Toyota Center. It has killed our home court advantage that we used to have the in The Summit

    Hakeem wont' help.

Agree with 2a, but with Fisher, JVG would be successful.

    2004-2005

    Sura
    10.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.5 assists.

    Fisher
    11.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and 4.1 assists.

Without knowing Sura was done, thats a good choice at the time.

You haven't paid enough attention to the Laker's turnaround. Do you know Fisher now is the starting PG on the Lakers team? Lakers' PG was in turmoil before Fisher went back to Lakers.
