Ailing Yao and the Rockets drop a tough one to Memphis

Did anyone know that we have ailing players against Memphis????

There are two things that give Yao Ming and the Rockets fits: teams that run a lot, and teams with two good centers to match up against Yao; with twelve fouls and twice the stamina, a pair of big men can wear Yao down.

Memphis had both tonight with the return of Darko Milicic, and a flu-bitten Rockets squad, coming off a tough home game last night, couldn't match their intensity.

Scoring only 38 points in the second half, Houston lost one that they should have won, 104-93.

The last time the Rockets faced the Grizz, both Tracy McGrady and Ron Artest were injured and Memphis shot out to an early lead; Houston never recovered and they fell, 109-97.

This time, Houston had McGrady and Artest, but Yao wasn't himself. Clearly winded even in the first few minutes of the game, he had to leave the court several times, suffering from the stomach flu. Aaron Brooks, with the same flu, didn't even dress for the game.

The Grizzlies took full advantage of Houston's short bench and the return of Milicic, the guy drafted behind LeBron James in 2003. Milicic had missed the last 18 games with a broken hand, but that didn't affect his strength and stamina.

With both Milicic and Marc Gasol battering away at Yao, he couldn't perform at his usual levels. It's frankly amazing that he put up 20 points and 9 boards, right at his season average.

Yao = The REAL TRU WARRIOR.
And people still asks why he gets a "free pass"?

ppls will say he's not tough and is soft.

he could play better at times, but imo "aggressive" is a much better word to use.

Very true. The two are used interchangeably when describing Yao, but they have completely different meanings and implications. Ah well, there is so much I'm disappointed with as it relates to the Rockets though at the moment. :(

that's why yao was so winded in the game...i was wondering what happened.

to be honest, if i had stomach flu (which i had before), i didn't even have the energy walking out of my home...

talk about playing a full game of nba bball....

First off, I do take my hat off to Yao for trying to play, and still playing relatively well despite having to go off and on the court.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but hasn't Tracy played through a flu, or flu-like symptoms as well for the Rockets? There's was hardly hoopla about that. I also don't recall how well or how poorly he played. I would guess he played just fine, otherwise there would have been more made of it.

As to the original post, unless you happened to miss the game, they stated that Brooks had the flu-like symptoms and later on said that Yao was starting to suffer from them as well.

He did, last season. Road game against the Cavaliers. He was criticized by some for his less-than-stellar performance in that game (he was pretty much invisible for long stretches), but the Rockets won handily anyway and life was good then so it didn't amount to much.

I'm proud of Yao. It's not easy to play with explosive diarrhea. Great work.

Yao wasn't the problem. Neither were the Grizzlies' centers.

The problem was O.J. Mayo going off for 32 points - with McGrady playing NO defense.

That and the fact that our bench didn't score.

Memphis BBQ is about sauce and pork
    Texas BBQ is about beef.

probably didn't get the stomach flu from bbq since that stuff is cooked for hours.
