Anyone have any advice? I have always gotten excellent reviews on all performance reviews including the one in January. Is there anyway I could milk some severance out of them? I hear the package they gives sucks. For exempt employees isn't it usually 3 months. I also have unpaid days I had to work can I get money for that too?
I am EE work in semi products. I think the reason why I am getting laid off is because I made it known to my boss that I planned to get an MBA. I have always been reviewed top 10-15% of the company so I am not sure what other reason they would can me. Of course there is supposedly massive layoffs at our company.
This is why you never make your personal and career plans known to your employer! Except if it's a goal that benefits the employer...
Well I did so because they said they weren't doing cuts this Q. I figured they would cut next Q and then I could have got severance plus gone to school.
You are right. There is discrimination in layoffs. You can forget the performance review crap. I know someone that got laid off for having no children. The manager was saying that some people wouldn't have any problems in a layoff, because they have no children. BAM! A layoff was announced a month later, and they were told "It will be ok, you don't have kids."
Pshhh... my wife was the only one in the department with small kids. That don't mean much anymore either... to the OP: Prayin' for you bro... START putting a resume out and applying for other positions NOW. Don't wait on it if you feel like it's happening... My wife got the notice that it was going to happen to someone (up to 1000+) a week before.... and thought, "not my department... we're the ones that train new hires." That's what they all thought... now, as it turns out, several in her role were let go around the entire company. She had friends that are in the exact same boat that live in other states... she was just the only one where we live. Her only "fault" in the whole matter was a false sense of job security. There's hardly no job security anywhere anymore.
If you get anything consider yourself lucky. A bunch of people got laid off where I work and they only got paid until the end of he day. No vacation time or sick time or until the end of the pay period.
Yeah, you probably should not have told your boss. If you want to discuss internal career opportunities, by all means, talk to your boss. But discussion of external opportunities or leaving is a big no-no. Always remember that he/she is your BOSS first, friend second, and will usually act in the best interests of the company over your own. Sorry to be harsh (really, I am), but if you get laid off, you have no one to blame but yourself. When I left my prior job to get my MBA, only a select few co-workers (trustworthy, too) knew what I was planning. My boss didn't know anything until I gave my 2 weeks notice... precisely because of the situation you now find yourself in.
That really sucks, man. Our company just announced they will do a voluntary program which is a program that offers employees a severance package that is doubled. After that, they'll decide if the goal was met or not, if not, they'll do involuntary layoffs. I was offered to do that program but I think I'm gonna stay put because if I take it, I won't be eligible for unemployment. It's a risk we all take if we don't take the package. We could be laid off or not. This sucks.
Yes, it really sucks when it happens, glad I am with a university now and don't have to worry about that kind of stuff right now.
My brother survived three rounds of lay-offs at the Dallas Morning News before finally taking an offer similar to yours about six months ago. And just recently the DaMN announced that they're cutting another 800 jobs. Seems like he made the right move. Of course, the newspaper biz is dying, so it was smart of him to get out of it in the first place...
See how one word ruins that entire sentance. If you take the "off" out, suddenly this is not a depressing thread. I'm sorry, I hope it all works out for the best.
Honestly, I didn't expect this. We're in oil & gas industry so this is a big company. My main issue is that if I take the package, I would have to have a job before my severance package runs out which would be about 6 weeks. Considering the economy, I have no clue if it's hard to find a job for my field. I guess it doesn't matter how big your company is, you will still be subjected to some kind of reductions in workforce.
For the companies that I have worked, its the greater of two weeks or one week per year of service. WRT unpaid days, unless you got it in writing, you are likely screwed.
That sux...I agree that i expected more from the oil and gas industry, at least in the long run...everyone is laying off for the sake of laying off... As for Air Langhi, there really isn't anything you could do...you could ask for more severence, but why would they give you that, unless you had dirt on the boss...what do you mean unpaid days you had to work? if you're exempt, you're just a nice guy for working those days...
