This is the bigger picture: I'm pretty sure it is him, that's why his PR team took such an aggressive stance when negotiating with the newspaper. I fully expect athletes like him to smoke and party hard during the offseason, considering the amount of built up energy he has, but it sucks someone had to photograph it. Looks like his diet will go from 12,000 cals of junk food to 3 litres of lemon water and colon cleanser for the next month.
that does not look like phelps. phelps is WAY more ripped. and besides... WHO CARES ABOUT WEED ANYMORE
He's clearly not a very smart person given he is in a sport where drug testing is the norm albeit not all the time. He's a celeb whereever he goes. If he wants to take a bong hit, then maybe he should do it in private. Is he seriously that dumb to take bong hits in a dorm room full of students with prying camera phones ready to pounce? Assuming he gets clean before he is tested again, then there is probably nothing they can do. I wouldn't expect it to be in his system for more than a week unless he does it often. Is a pic alone enough to get him banned under drug rules? Surely, they need a positive drug test?
Seriously, half of the muddled bong hit pictures you ever see of dudes in college dorm rooms look just like that guy. Are they seriously thinking they can sink the S.S. Phelps with this one photo? Hasn't everybody grown out of the point-and-giggle phase when it comes to mar1juana anyway?
wait people are still making a big deal over weed? geez... it makes me sick that his endorsements and all could be at risk because of weed.
I'm sure all the newspapers or tabloids in the US the pic would have got to one of them first instead of one based in London. The website looks like an online tabloid.
it's him. http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/swimming/news/story?id=3876804 kinda reminds me of the canadian snowboarder that lost his gold medal b/c of pot. Although I guess he was much dumber since he did it around the actual competition. Either way, I couldn't care less about it. It's not performance enhancing, and I don't see it as any worse than alcohol.
unless the IOC tests him, there's nothing here that hurts phelps' career. if that's even him (Steve Francis anyone?) they can't prove it wasn't tobacco in that there "water pipe" I'm sure the owner of the "water pipe" was told that it was to be used for tobacco only...
I remember that. He said he wasn't smoking it but was around others who did he also pointed out that mar1juana wasn't a performance enhancing drug.
It really sucks that a 23 year old kid has to make a public statement, apologize to all his fans, and promise he wont do it again. So dumb.
