lol. I was thinking the same... you shoulda seen that one guy that shot squirrels with a bazooka... Whatever happened to ROXRAN anyway?
How could you live with yourself if a family member was killed and you didn't stop the threat when you had the chance? Nobody is looking for a confrontation in a home invasion, except the intruder.
Agreed. I can't understand why anyone would knock a persons desire and right to defend themselves. The gun owners in this scenario aren't the ones looking for a fight here.
If breaking into your home is not enough "psychological deterrrny" I doubt a shotgun noise will be. Besides if they are supposed to hear that they also probably heard your entire "WTF was that noise" conversation.
I've heard stories from a people I know about a potential thief trying to break in, only to turn and run at the sound of a shotgun pump. Most people breaking into a house aren't killers and they are probably as scared as you, just more desperate.
I think it was a 20/20 episode about violent offenders in prison or along those lines, it was about inmates on death row or doing life or something. But the story of one particular inmate's act of crime made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. He basically said his crew would break in, get to the master bedroom, force the owners at gun point to turn of the alarm. Then as soon as that is done, then they can slow down that's where things "get fun".
I don't own a gun so I have no advice regarding how best to secure your gun. I will repeat the same advice I always give on the subject of self-defense. Study Martial Arts. You might not always be able to get to your gun, your gun might be taken away from you. Your martial arts skills will always be with you. Also in case of a home invasion unless your immediate life or those of others are in danger don't look to confront a burglar even if you are armed. You don't know if they are armed, you don't know how many might be there, there are a lot of uncertainties in any confrontation and your possesions aren't worth your life or those of your family. The best thing is to get out instead of trying to shoot it out with intruders.
Please understand that everything you have said is just your opinion and many people have the core belief that retreating from their own home is not an option.
There are some that look like regular storm doors, but have aluminum frames, multi-point locking systems and shatter-resistant glass that aren't that expensive. In the past, my mom would open the door a crack when answering the door, and depend on a chain lock to keep someone out. Those are totally useless against someone kicking the door down, as my mother discovered. But with a storm door, such as this one, she can open her normal door completely while still having an unobtrusive extra layer of security to keep others out.
The ones I have seen are all steel with a huge lock and a frame surrounding them that is bolted in. You would have to cut them off to get in them (or pick the lock I guess). They do not look like a safe door though. They are really nice and have many different styles. Anyone not really thinking about it would just think you have a really nice door there, they do not look ghetto or anything.
My head instructor is an ex-cop who will tell you that and have trained with cops who will tell you that also. I don't think there has ever been a poll conducted on cops but I suggest next time you are talking to some cops ask them if they recommend confronting a home invader. I'm all for protecting your life and your family but your possesions aren't worth the risk shooting it out with an intruder especially in your house.
I keep my guns in my closet. From my master bedroom, I have to go through the master bathroom and then into the closet. If I were to fear for my safety, I can retreat into the closet. There is only one narrow path to get to me in my closet, and I'd see you coming from plenty far away. I have only my wife with me, and the guns are up on top shelves (pistol), or propped against a back wall, behind clothes (rifles), and they stay loaded. One tip I'd suggest to everyone, gun or not, is that you keep a phone where you can get to it. If you have a place of retreat, put a phone in there, or make a habit of keeping your cell phone there at night.
That is great advice to keep a phone where you can quickly get to it. I will repeat again the importance of not looking to confront an invader so its also important to always know how to quickly exit your house and have multiple exits if possible. This goes not just for home invasions but for other emergencies like fires, gas leaks and etc...
