No, I was thinking of "Touch Me". "Hello" still sounded like the Doors. "Touch Me" sounded like David Cassidy's songwriters got involved.
i wouldn't add prince to that list. tom petty played last year and had one of the highest grossing tours of 2008.
The article ignored many who have, and wasn't spot on with all of them... but ... what's funnier is some of the others that posters here are listing who started their careers or made it big with the act of shark jumping. I won't point fingers.
When artists are past their apex in popularity then change their style or try something way different, its jumping the shark When the artist does it and it succeeds, its "reinventing" ? Maybe I'm wrong, but it seemed plenty artists at the start of mass distributed film & music were all-around entertainers. They sang, danced, acted, hosted variety shows, had radio shows, traveling shows. That kinda was the point, as long as they were a popular face and provided entertainment. If Babe Ruth could act, as long as he attracted a crowd and didnt suck they'd film him. Typecasting's also existed the whole time of course, but no one told Dean Martin get off TV and go back to your singing ging. Buuuut... yeah the current standards I'm disappointed in John Mayer. He's doing what we'd all do, but he went from respected blues musician to cool blues guy appearing on Chapelle Show to outright tabloid whoring douche.
