fba34, If you like Ryan Adams, you really should check out his old band Whiskeytown if you haven't already. Their album Stranger's Almanac is incredible and last year's Pneumonia album, which was released after the band had already broken up, was, in my opinion, the best record of 2001.
Good choices, fba, especially on Sarah McLachlan and the Smashing Pumpkins. Also, Dave Matthews is good and Travis (despite me not having any of their CDs) is a band that I'll get around to getting into some day, since they supposedly are similar to Radiohead and Coldplay. RM95: I'm going to get a Sonic Youth CD next month. Any recommendations? I was thinking about Daydream Nation.
Dirty is the best Sonic Youth album for someone who hasn't heard them before. It has the best sound. Though, I think Washing Machine is their most underrated album. Wilco, Son Volt, Jay Farrar, Uncle Tupelo. It all kicks a$$ to me. I was just listening to the new Wilco this morning. Great. Another great album released this year that kicks a$$ is an album by four guys from Austin, TX. I saw them open for Superchunk last year at Fitzgerald's and they were crazier than any band I had ever seen. Three of the guys switched from singing to drumming to bass guitar after every song. I've never seen drums beaten with so much fury. The other guy just stood off to the side and played killer riffs all night like they're going out of style. They wrecked the entire stage! The name of the band: And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead. Needless to say, I recommend them. Now, for my Music Awards De la Soul: The Best rap group ever! Neil Young and Bob Dylan: Its a tie! The Best songwriters ever! Pavement: Best Band of the 90's! (followed closely by Nirvana and then Flaming Lips(personal fave)) Replacements: Best Band of the 80's! (runnerup: Talking Heads) Clash: Best band of the 70's Beatles: Best Band of the 60's and of all-time. (runnerup for 60's: Velvet Underground)
dave matthews sting the police counting crows bela fleck jars of clay u2 i could list a lot more...but these would be in my top tier
You know Manny, it really isn't that bad. Unlike a lot of popular country music, there is a high level of musicianship that goes along with bluegrass. If you ever watch them really start playing a banjo or mandolin it's absolutely astounding how fast their fingers move. I kind of equate bluegrass with jazz. They're both uniquely American forms of music. They both had their earliest beginnings in folk songs and spirituals. And they both can require high levels of technical skill. It's just that one was born in the clubs of Harlem and the other in the hills of Appalachia.
Originally posted by Manny Ramirez I really like about every type of music even classical, but I cannot stand Bluegrass. I'm with Mrs. JB on bluegrass. A good high-lonesome voice is so hauntingly sad, that it can give you goose-bumps. Also, Al Jourgenson of Ministry claims that bluegrass has the fastest beat of any style of music in existence.

I'm weird with music. I mostly like epic stuff without lyrics, like movie soundtracks and orchestral VG albums. The Waterworld sountrack is my current obsession. However, I do like some conventional music: - Republica (British techno) - Tragically Hip (their older stuff) - Vanessa Mae (modern violin) - Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones
