The cheapest I have found is coastalcontacts.com and lens.com (lens.com is just a hair cheaper).

They probably won't send to you without a current prescription though.

lens.com beat 1800contacts by $35 for a years worth of my toric lenses. But I agree, no matter where you go, they're probably going to ask you for your Rx directly or your doctor's contact info so they can verify your Rx.

Well, you should get your eyes checked regularly anyway, so just go and get that prescription renewed. It's also dangerous to your eyes to assume that you're still the same prescription now. If it's off just a little bit, it could cause you a lot of eye strain.

I think even most online places require a prescription to fill them.

I think Walmarts usually have cheap eye exams, and even have coupons for a lot of them.

1800 contacts is great. They have a price match and beat system. So you can show them any site that has cheaper contacts and they will beat that price by 2%. I ended up with a $65 discount on four boxes of contacts. On top of that the sales agent gave me free shipping.

I used to shop via VisionDirect.com, but have now found 1800 Contacts to be the better option.

Need prescriptions? 1800contacts just calls your previous guy and gets the prescription from them. Better than wasting time in their office while Doctor Whatever leeches of your insurance.

I actually tried that a while back and they sent me back an e-mail saying my prescription was expired. However, they told me that once I got the prescription renewed, they'd take $30 off my purchase. So it may be beneficial to attempt an order through 1-800-CONTACTS even if he knows he'll get rejected.

I need new contacts as well but haven't been to the eye doctor in well over a year. So you definitely need a prescription to order them? Makes sense, if that's the case. How much does an eye exam cost uninsured? Anybody know?

Depends on the doctor, but generally around $100.00 just for the exam. They charge more for fittings of the contacts.

I don't think that 1-800 Contacts really checks your prescription. I've ordered many contacts from them using the contact information of an optometrist that I saw 10 years ago and from whom I've never received a prescription for contacts.

Since then, I did get prescriptions for contacts but I never bothered to change the contact information for the optometrist.

I think that 1-800 Contacts is on the expensive side though. Last month, I ordered a 3 month supply of daily 1-Day Acuvue lenses for $179.

Their customer service is very good. I paid $20 for overnight shipping and FedEx did not deliver the lenses on time so 1-800 Contacts refunded me the entire cost of shipping.

Wal-Mart cost me about the same, but I got both contact and glasses prescriptions. It's cheaper if you only do one of them.

I had the exact opposite experience. They called the doctor whose info I gave them, and actually spoke to a person at the office to find out if I was up to date or not. I don't see how you would get around that.
