So basically the club added another 4th or 5th caliber starter at best.

Sure would have been nice to add a number 2 or hell even a 3. And Wolf and Sheets are still available...oh well.

i'll post what I posted in the Valverde thread on this..

    hahahahaha Russ Ortiz!! Amazing.

I mean, fine, injury or whatever... but the guy was NOT good in '05, '06, OR '07.. and in '05 and part of '06, he played his home games at Arizona..

I'd like to say either he or Hampton will pan out.. but really, I think Ortiz is a lost cause. Here's to hoping for a Moehler-esque season out of him......

Damn, I was completely stoked that we signed both Hampton and Russ Ortiz.

    Then I realized it wasn't 2003.

He was arguably the worst pitcher in baseball before Tommy John surgury.

It's a freaking minor league deal. Relax people.

If it pans out, there's a guy who won 20 games in the recent past. If not, you have a filler in AAA or you release him.

True...but there are some on this board who are reacting as though we signed Ortiz to a big, fat deal and have named him our opening day starter.

Seeing 35 year old Derek Lowe signing a 4 year $60 million dollar deal today, can maybe see why they feel compelled to go cheap (though Russ Ortiz is just a minor league deal possible spring training cut)

Thats the price for a #1-2 pitcher.

Hey, let's set the "Astros All-Time Former 18-20game Winner FA Signings" starting rotation:

    --Greg Swindell
    --Doug Drabek
    --Kent Bottenfield
    --Dwight Gooden
    --Russ Ortiz
    --Mike Hampton
--Bob Forsch (think that was a trade though)
    --Robin Roberts

...there have to be some others.

If we could only go back 10 years on him and Hampton we would be in good shape right now. Its been all downhill for Ortiz since he passed 30. That would be their prime for a lot of players.

2003 isn't *that* long ago. He was still pretty good in '04, before he fell off the edge in '05 and beyond. He was a rookie in '98, so I don't think "recent past" is unreasonable.

But I will still employ geritol and geriatric jokes wrt this rotation!
