For some reason I thought this was some veiled thread to talk up Vince Young after the wave of (well deserved) "Mario over Bush" threads.

Then I realized, hey, no one is that stupid.

Um, whoever he bought it from? He just didn't automatically pull the domain from the ether into his name. He must have bought/registered it with someone. And if it's not theirs to sell then they're selling stolen products.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name_registrar

Nobody owns the non-registered domain names, but they are controlled by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Unregistered names can be bought through an accredited domain registrar. While they will help you register the domain, they don't "own" it. It's not like you're walking into a store and buying something off the shelf.

The domain name only becomes "owned" once it is registered.

The thing that makes this case notably illegal is that it was so obviously purchased in bad faith. A while ago Kevin Spacey sued to get KevinSpacey.com, but he failed because it was deemed that the current owner was using it for legitimate purposes (or not at all) and had made no efforts whatsoever to make money over Kevin Spacey's name (by having links or content relating to Kevin Spacey or by trying to sell the domain to him).

This case, however, couldn't be any more illegal. The guy purchased the domain after noticing it expire and immediately tried to sell it back to the previous owner. I don't know why they paid him $35,000 for the domain. Perhaps they wanted the website active immediately (a lawsuit could take months and the website wouldn't be transferred until afterwards) or perhaps they didn't understand domain law. But that doesn't mean this cybersquatter did the right thing...it just means he got away with doing the wrong thing.

I get your drift, but you have your facts wrong...

"Records indicate that in March 2007, the George W. Bush Library Foundation, using Yuma Solutions as its contractor, bought the domain name from a private citizen for $3,000. But the registration was set to expire within a few months.

Hunger, 26, told WRAL News he was suprised to see the library name available and grabbed it after it expired.

Months later, Huger had received some offers on it, but he declined to provide details.

After the Dallas Morning News reported that the library had lost the domain, Mills contacted Illuminati Karate and asked to buy it back, Huger said."

I'm sure that George bought it speculatively but someone else created it speculatively and the Library purchased it from them.

How and why would they purchase the domain without transferring it to their control? Sounds like they failed to receive notification that it was expiring.

I use GoDaddy and they are relentlessly letting me know when my renewals dates are coming.

At any rate, good for George. Domain names are like virtual real estate and he got ahold of one that appreciated because of circumstances.

I'm not sure I get the hatred for the "Cybersquatter?" If your content is interesting enough, it shouldn't matter what the site is called.

This site has had 3 domain name changes already, and it still is growing exponentially.

If someone wants to pay for a certain domain name, I color them the idiot.

That's a very poor analogy. Gold is a generic item used by many people. A domain name, especially one with somebody's name in it, is very specific and really only has value to that person or group. And whether it was legal or not it was still a douche bag thing to do.

So any domain name with GeorgeBush in it belongs to him? What about GeorgeBushisadouche.com?

    That wouldn't have happened with

BOOKMAN: Well, let me tell you something, funny boy. Y'know that little stamp,

the one that says "New York Public Library"? Well that may not mean

anything to you, but that means a lot to me. One whole hell of a lot.

Sure, go ahead, laugh if you want to. I've seen your type before:

Flashy, making the scene, flaunting convention. Yeah, I know what you're

thinking. What's this guy making such a big stink about old library

books? Well, let me give you a hint, junior. Maybe we can live without

libraries, people like you and me. Maybe. Sure, we're too old to change

the world, but what about that kid, sitting down, opening a book, right

now, in a branch at the local library and finding drawings of pee-pees

and wee-wees on the Cat in the Hat and the Five Chinese Brothers?

Doesn't HE deserve better? Look. If you think this is about overdue

fines and missing books, you'd better think again. This is about that

kid's right to read a book without getting his mind warped! Or: maybe

that turns you on, Seinfeld; maybe that's how y'get your kicks. You and

your good-time buddies. Well I got a flash for ya, joy-boy: Party time

is over. Y'got seven days, Seinfeld. That is one week!

i don't understand the hate either. if you're dumb enough to let it lapse, you can't really complain.

I think there are at least a couple of guys who have something to get off their chest... :D

I've lost domains myself, but I let it lapse and had second thoughts... too late! My bad.
