Four children (including the Plum child) entered paintings in the Houston Fair art contest. Each child submitted a different style of painting, and each child was awarded a ribbon for his artistic talent in the ceremony on the last day of the fair.. Determine who painted what, and what color ribbon each child won (1st=blue, 2nd=red, 3rd=yellow, 4th=green). 1. Bill's painting was not the still life. 2. The four paintings were (in some order) Cindy's, the White child's, the still life, and the one that took 2nd place. 3. The Brown child's painting finished ahead of Alice's, which finished ahead of the abstract painting. 4. The portrait finished ahead of Doug's painting (which was not the abstract). 5. Bill's painting finished just ahead of the landscape, which finished just ahead of the Black child's painting.
Hydra!! I spent a half hour on this damn thing and you beat me to it! Here's the last names: 1. White 2. Brown 3. Black 4. Plum
Ok... Try this one A single letter is on each of the six sides of four toy blocks. No letter is repeated. Any side of a block can be face up and the blocks can be in any order. The twelve words listed below can be spelled face up using the four blocks. What are the six letters on each block? AVOW CHAP FERN MICE SONG WALK BOTH DORM FUEL PLOY TAXI ZEST
This was fun.... Block #1: O,C,K,X,Z,F Block #2: A,B,Y,E,D,G Block #3: T,P,W,M,N,U Block #4: H,L,V,S,I,R
I don't see how there is enough information given to solve this (the first one). I drew out the appropriate grids, but still do not get enough concrete evidence. Bill is not: black / still life, landscape / 3rd, 4th Cindy is not: white / still life / 2nd Alice is not: brown / abstract / 1st, 4th Doug is not: abstract, portrait / 1st White is not: Cindy / still life / 2nd Brown is not: Alice / abstract / 3rd, 4th Black is not: Bill / landscape / 1st, 2nd Plum is not: Still life is not: Bill, Cindy / White / 2nd Abstract is not: Alice, Doug / Brown / 2nd Landscape is not: Bill / Black / 1st, 4th Portrait is not: Doug / 4th 1st is not: Alice, Doug / Black / landscape 2nd is not: Cindy / White, Black / still life, abstract 3rd is not: Bill / Brown 4th is not: Bill, Alice / Brown / landscape, portrait I'm sure there is some logical leap that I'm not making. How did you arrive at your first concrete decision, hydra?
fadeaway, your concrete evidence is correct. When you get stuck like that, try to make a 50-50 guess that would cause a factual chain reaction. Either you'll hit a contradiction, or you'll solve the puzzle. This may be enough to help you figure it out, but if you want an example that'll give you concrete evidence, highlight the text below: From step (5), Bill is either 1st or 2nd. Assume he's 2nd. This means Alice is 3rd, since she's not 1st or 4th from (3). (3) also implies that the abstract is 4th. Now, since Doug's not 1st from (4), that means he's 4th. But, this means that Doug painted the abstract, which contradicts (4). So, our assumption is wrong, and Bill finished 1st.
Very nice, Azadre (the first one). I did solve it, but not before I would have bombed the LSAT had it been one of the Games.
Hmmm..... Wise guys are ya? 1. Four men are standing on the same side of an old bridge at night. The men can only cross two at a time. However, it takes each man a different amount of time to cross the bridge. The first man takes 1 minute, the second man takes 2 minutes, the third man takes five minutes, and the fourth man takes ten minutes. The bridge can support only two men at a time, and it takes the slowest of a pair of men to cross. I.E., if the first guy crosses with the fourth guy, it takes them ten minutes. Not eleven minutes total, but the slowest of the two men's time. They all have to get across the bridge, but there is a problem. They have only one flashlight, and it must accompany every trip across the bridge. How do all four men get across the bridge in seventeen minutes? 2. What's black when you get it,, Red when you use it, And white when you're all through with it? 3. What is the LONGEST word when spelled backward is the same as it is spelled forward? (It is not a name. Ex: Hannah) 4. What is the one word in the English language that when capitalized takes on an entire different meaning? (No, it is not a name.) 5. There is a field that is surronded by trees. The trees are so thick and dense that there is no way to get in or out of the field. But, there is a cabin that is locked from the outside. Inside there are a couple of dead people. How did it get there? 6. Joe is a lonely man who lives all by himself. One day he decided to take a walk. He turned off the light and closed the door. Hundreds of people died because of this, why? 7. This thing all things devours: Birds, beasts, trees, flowers; Gnaws iron, bites steel; Grinds hard stones to meal; Slays kings, Ruins town, And beats high mountain down. What is it?
No. 1 and No. 2 go across: 2 minutes No. 2 returns with flash: 2 minutes No. 3 and No. 4 go across: 10 minutes No. 1 returns with Flash: 1 minute No. 1 and No. 2 Go across: 2 minutes 17 minutes total
This one is purrdy boggleing 2. What's black when you get it,, Red when you use it, And white when you're all through with it?
