Still, statistics can often be a useful starting place. Stopping an opponent from scoring without committing fouls, which eventually result in free throws, is an important thing for any team. Blocks and steals measure defensive stops — a block automatically results in a missed shot, and a steal represents a possession change. For the following ranking I used the defensive production total (DPT) — blocks + steals - personal fouls.

    Top 10 Defensive Production Total

    1. Ben Wallace, Detroit 230
    2. Andrei Kirilenko, Utah 106
    3. Allen Iverson, Philadelphia 79
    4. Jason Kidd, New Jersey 56
    5. Tracy McGrady, Orlando 50
    6. Kerry Kittles, New Jersey 49
    7. Tim Duncan, San Antonio 41
    8. Kevin Garnett, Minnesota 38
    9. David Robinson, San Antonio 33
    10. Eddie Griffin, Houston 31

That's from an article I read. Pretty good ranking among the top players, huh?

Nice work, but I'm a bit skeptical of the statistic because the guy at the top is 8x better than the tenth guy, and Shaq pretty much intimidates our entire team into blowing layups and short jumpers ever time we play LA and he's not in the list.

I'm surprised Shaq isn't on that list come to think about it. He gets his share of blocked shots.

Steals should be worth more than blocks. A block does not guarantee that the team will not score on that possession while a steal does.

    Shaq's total = 41 steals + 137 blocks - 199 PF's = - 21

IMHO, the formula is skewed for the following reasons:

    1) Steals and blocks count equally. (As bobrek mentioned).

    2) Every PF does not result in points for the opponent (examples such as a foul like charging or the first in the last 2 minutes).

    3) There is no consideration for defensive rebounding. Shaq had 480 of them!

YUP! A defensive rebound is a defensive stop, the other team no longer has posession of the ball. I agree that this is a pretty messed up. Its nice that EG is in the "top ten" but does it really mean anything.

For as big as Shaq is he's not that great of a defender. He should lead the league in blocks and rebounds not a guy around 6'8.

    Props to Ben Wallace.

Not a bad ranking at all, but one person who I think should be there is Ron Artest. This guy is a demon on the defensive end. Watch a Pacers game and you will see what Im talkin' about.

They (nba) need to stop giving eastern conference players awards. Ben is a good player and seems to put up decent numbers, but he's in the east where good big guys are at a minimum. I would like to see his stats vs the west. I know on one of the last games of the season, Duncan dropped 37 on him. Much to the dismay last yr when Philly won all personal awards, all it did was piss Shaq and company off.

Do they include offensive fouls in that category? If they do, then that explains why Shaq is so low.

    Kirilenko #2? Come on...

Stats are the worst thing you can use to determine who is a good defender.

What kind of stats can Doug Christie get? Steals?? And then...?

If Griffin was Top 10, our defense would be better than the worst in the NBA.

Griffin also is not good at man-to-man D.

Griffin is a very good help defender, but this might be the best example of stats that have very little relevance to reality.

llebigez, that's the same thing people said about Elton Brand and how he'd flop in the West.

Brand didn't flop, neither would Wallace. Great players are great players.
