^Yea i have noticed this too. UT is sending in a lot of busts. Particularly on defense. I would go for best defensive player available in the first round unless there is a major move in the offseason to make one stronger. But when have we ever had a major offseason move.
Really? Like who? Aaron Ross- Starting CB for Giants (Super Bowl) Michael Griffin- Starting S for Titans (7 INTs) Cedric Griffin- Starting CB for Vikings Nathan Vasher - Starting Cb for Bears Quentin Jammer - Starting S for Chargers Tarrell Brown - Starting CB for 49ers Derrick Johnson - Starting LB for Chiefs Shaun Rogers - Starting DL for Browns (3 Pro-Bowls) Casey Hampton - Starting DL for Steelers (Super Bowl, 4 Pro-Bowls) Really I think the only bust (on defense) UT has put out has been Huff and he's only in his 3rd year.
This is true, UT's defensive recruits are no slouches. Unfortunately for PR purposes, the 3 most famous Longhorns in sport right now are Cedric Benson, Vince Young, and Ricky Williams... all of whom have had a rough go of it so far... not to say that's will be an ultimate legacy.
My feeling is that we'll do something like this in the draft. We'll trade down from 15 to the 20-25 range & pick up an extra 3rd round pick. 1) Cody (DT) or Raji (DT) 2) Everette Brown (DE) or Brandon Graham (DE) 3a) Myron Rolle (S) or Michael Hamlin (S) or Sean Smith (S/CB) 3b) Rashad Jennings (RB) or Shonn Greene (RB) 4) Max Unger (C/G/T) or Captain Munnerlyn (CB) 5) Rhett Bomar (QB) or Ramses Barden (WR) 6) Phillip Hunt (DE) or Brandon Swain (DE) 7) Selvish Capers (OT) or Mike Johnson (G/T)
You can make that argument about the primary skill positions of QB and RB I guess, but there are 37 UT alums in the NFL... Compare that to 36 USC alums and 36 Florida alums, 37 from Tenn, 39 from Florida State, 40 from Ohio State, 41 from Georgia and LSU, and 42 from Michigan. Also, 27 from OU and 23 from A&M.
Thats a great idea. I just hope if this were to happen that we could get more than a third for moving down a couple of spots.
Yeah others have detailed it already, but I don't know where you're getting your random info. Name the defensive busts you're thinking of. It's pretty much all on the offensive side of the ball.. Simms, Vince Young thus far.. Benson has been up and down though he somehow showed signs in the last 5 games of the season (I have no idea how).. Ricky had his issues but had some good years before that (and a decent one this year considering how long he was out of the nfl). But then you have Charles who looked solid backing up LJ, Selvin Young doing better than expected aside from some injury issues like every other Denver RB.. Bo Scaife having a solid career in TEN, and hey Limas Sweed hasn't even had a shot yet in PIT, but he might make some noise next year. (I'm not a big VY fan, but I do think he still has some positives to give on the field)
We'll definitely have to wait and see who's available before trading down. The draft class could be pretty deep if many of the underclassmen declare since a lot of them could be chosen before #15 (Bradford, Stafford, Wells, Moreno, Crabtree, A. Smith, Davis, Mays, Brown, Hardy). Also, I don't see Everette Brown falling into the 2nd round if he declares. He's a big time pass rusher that someone will take early because he maybe the best 3-4 OLB prospect.
I'd love to have Taylor Mays too but I think he'll be gone before then. William Moore from Missouri wouldn't be a bad pick either though.
I do not think any UT players are busts. They are solid but I guess a few have not met expectations. There are not many that are pro-bowlers if you look at the list. One example is Quentin Jammer. The guy was a top 5 pick and I read somewhere that Charger fans believe he is a borderline bust. He has not really stood out and played up to his draft position. He starts but hey, so does Travis Johnson for the Texans!
I think you can definitely say that Cedric Benson was a bust. He did nothing for the team that drafted him and isn't doing that great now. I don't think it's fair at all to say Ricky Williams was a bust. He had a good 4 year career. If you look at it from Miami's perspective, he could be seen as a bust trade but he had a career year in 2002 (1800 yards rushing). I'm been as critical as anyone about VY but it is still too soon to tell after only 2 seasons starting.
Everette Brown from FSU hands down! You can only do this if the Texans resign Dunta Robinson. Then get the best CB or FS available 2nd round. A great pass rush will make our DB's look a whole lot better. More sacks + more hurried passes = more picks.
Brown would be a great pick at #15 but I'm not so sure that he'll be available, he's being projected as a 3-4 OLB and will probably go a little early. As far as getting a DE opposite Mario, we also have to make sure he's good against the run and not just a pure pass rusher, the strongside DE must hold his own.
i don't think texans would draft corner in the first...if they went secondary i'd rather go for a safety. I do like the idea of the texans trading back and picking up an extra pick later. they seem to find some great talent in the 3rd and 4th round.
If Jenkins (he won't be) or Davis (possible) are available at #15, I think it would be very hard to pass them up. Also, Stafford, Moreno, and Wells declared today, and it was reported that Bradford will declare as well.
Yep Crabtree is said to be declaring too. I will say I do trust Kubes and Smith running our draft. Honestly since we are so close I wouldnt be surprised if we trade up to grab who we really NEED.
Looks like Mays is going to return for his senior season at USC. I really wanted Mays at #15, but even if he wasn't there, he would have pushed another high prospect down a spot. http://www.dailynews.com/usc/ci_11439613
