I thought Rick and his coaching staff was bringing a motion offense (princeton like) to Houston with quick cuts for easy buckets. I have seen maybe 20% of this during the year with the 2nd team only. It appears that the 1st team won't or is unable to run the offense due to injuries or unwillingness. It appears that they are running the JVG post up go one on one offense (Yao, Tmac, or Artest) that starts to bog down in the 4th quarter as teams double off Rafer and now Brooks (who by the way is shooting at least 2 feet from behind the 3 point line) who are shooting horribly to say the least. The Washington game was a prime example of the 2nd team running the desired offense and getting the Rockets back in the game and then watch the starters throw it away by going to the one on one post up offense.
I've wondered the same thing. At times, the offense looks so stagnant, I wonder if Rudy T is still the coach.
adapt given how the game is unfolding. Obviously we start out going to the great wall, our best player who is a mismatch for any team, then and we make adjustments as the game progresses.
It's simple. Move the ball, and move your body. Read what the defense is trying to take away, and react accordingly. Our guys have not even come close to making hard enough cuts for the offense to flow as it should in the eyes of our coach. We do not move the ball rapidly enough from weak side to strong side, and we do not cut hard enough. The 1st unit seems to bog down in my eyes because TMac doesn't seem willing to move off of the ball. He prefers to play with it. As gifted as he is, when the ball slows down in his hands our guys tend to stand around and watch him. It's been that way for the last few seasons. He is so good at getting them shots that they play with less urgency, and everything bogs down.
You have to play to your personel. Right now, our best players are not built to play in a motion offense. We run our offense mainly through the post which is what we should be doing. Our size creates mismatches in the post and forces teams to bring double teams which opens up things on the perimeter and on the weak side. I don't have a problem with the sets we are running. Sometimes the execution is poor, but we won't be known for our offense. We're a defensive team first.
EXACTLY!!! And that is why it is failing with the type of players we have. The Coach has made poor judgement of the abilities of several players, especially Yao Ming. There is liitle in common between our athletic half and our non athletic half. It sounds like a formula that will always have problems!!
I think the Celtics and the Spurs(the two dominant teams of this decade) are defense-first teams as well.
Tracy Lamar is now our acting PG and our new primary perimeter threats are Rafer Alston and Shane Battier. The rest of the league better watch out.
Hmm and to think this coach i was thinking about was fired just for trying to make that team the celtics and the spurs of today. sigh I think his name was something german. Van something? huh
Celtics won ONE NBA championship after several losing seasons and now they are considered as one of the dominant teams of this DECADE??
Come on now. You got what you wanted with Brooks getting the start and he turned in a crappy performance. Not saying he wont improve, but dont take this thread as a shot at Tmac, Alston, and Battier and leave out Brooks when he passed up shot after shot, and then missed shot after shot. Yes it was one game, and yes he is the highest shooting Rocket guard, and blah blah blah his ceiling is unknown. Still everyone bashes Tmac, yao, and alston after every game, Brooks deserves it too after his last few games. And yes, I know Ray Allen has struggles during the season. Blah, blah blah. Brooks has sucked recently. He plays a couple good games and there are five pro-Brooks threads. He plays a couple crappy games, you should accept there will be a bunch of anti-Brooks posts.
Is there a difference between Adelman's offense and JVG's offense? I haven't seen too much difference between the two. Adelman's offense just doesn't fit the personnel of this team. Not only is Yao not as great a passer as Divac or Webber, but no one on the team makes great cuts to the basket or wants to run around that much, so there really isn't anyone to pass to anyway. When Adelman first got here, I remember Yao taking a lot more open mid range jumpshots, but his shooting was pretty bad, so they got away from that quickly. And when Yao was on the high post, he forced some alley-oops to T-Mac the first few games, I think. There was an alley, but no oop. That didn't work out so well, so it looks like Adelman implemented more of JVG's offense.
And I know a coach, who just happens to be the coach of the Rockets, who was fired from his last job for not coaching ENOUGH defense. What does that tell you? This team has no identity.
Last time I checked, we were #10 in offensive efficiency. Considering we were 17th last season, and considering how POORLY Tmac and Artest have been playing (statistically), I call that a victory. When we start getting on a roll, imagine how good our offense will look! The offense (when its working) is based around posting up Yao. You have the best post up player in the league and 4-5 good 3 point shooters. Why force a type of offense on a group of players when they don't fit it?
