true multi-skilled offensive threat. Mission accomplished. His first full season in the majors was prodigious, as Berkman led the National League with 55 doubles and ranked among the top 10 in numerous other offensive categories. His doubles and extra-base hits (94) totals were the most ever by a switch-hitter. He also made his first of what could be many appearances on the All-Star team. <br><br><br><font color="#000000" face="arial" size="-1"><b>Hitting </b></font><br>Capable of batting anywhere from third through fifth in the lineup, Berkman settled into the cleanup spot. He combines the eagerness of a hitter who likes to swing at the first or second pitch with the patience of an artist who drew 92 walks last season. From the right side, Berkman likes the ball high; from the left, he's fairly relentless with the exception of a hole in his swing on pitches up and in. Berkman improved dramatically as a righthanded batter, hiking his average 90 points from that side. But he boasts substantially more power lefthanded. Any team hoping to neutralize him late in the game had better heat up its southpaw relievers. <br><br><br><font color="#000000" face="arial" size="-1"><b>Baserunning & Defense </b></font><br>Berkman has good first-step quickness breaking from the lefthanded batter's box. But his stolen-base success rate of 44 percent showed that he could stand to learn the element of surprise from teammate Jeff Bagwell. Berkman doesn't embarrass himself in the outfield. He appears to have found a home in left, which can be challenging at Enron due to its nooks and crannies. Though Berkman started 40 games in center field, he's not entirely a natural for that position. <br><br><br><font color="#000000" face="arial" size="-1"><b>2002 Outlook </b></font><br>Since Berkman barely has more than two years of service time, the Astros can lowball him for one more season before they have to start paying him what he's worth. dang dude...just put a link next time. But ya Berkman is the bomb...but this season I really don't think he's playing that well. .288 avg??? That's way below the same point last season. I'd rather have Lance at .330, 30 jacks than .300 with 40 hrs. Base hits are the key to producing runs. BAGS FOR MVP!!! People underestimate him. And he's finally off to his first good start in like 8 years.
Not that well? Surely you jest. His OBP isn't as good as I'd like it, but that SLG% is frickin fabulous. Won't stay this way though, his OBP will go up, and his SLG% will go down.
This is whats wrong with Astros fans. Dude is playing like a beast, and just because he has one homerun in this early part of the season means he cant be an mvp? I bite my thumb in your direction gr8-1.
Keep biting. He will not win the mvp if there are two guys doubling his homerun production. Heck, he's not even the best first baseman in the NL.
Last year, a corner OF with no power won the AL MVP, and you supported this. Of course, that was a disgrace. But Bagwell was a more valuable player than Ichiro last year... and he had a down year. So there's certainly hope . In the NL? I don't think there's a 1b that's better. Giambi probably is in the AL, but Baggy is a more complete player.
He had a three game stretch with some trouble, causing his average to go from .310 area to .255. That's what happens early in the season.
Helton might be better. He certainly puts up better numbers. But I wonder how he would do if half his games weren't played at Coors.
Todd Helton is a great player. However, his home/road splits are (1999-2001): Coors: .387 BA, .474 OBP, .751 SLG, 1.225 OPS Road: .296 BA, .384 OBP, .558 SLG, .942 OPS Road #s are still quite good, but I'll take Bags. (of course, I'm biased)
Berkman's Playing Awesome! Unfortunately, he isn't playing at all today. I hope that problem he had last night on that fly ball isn't serious. We need Lance to stay healthy this season.
Average isn't a good measure, because it doesn't incorporate power or walks. Berkman has 9 walks, making his OBP .385... quite good, though not as well as he did last year. He has 2 doubles and 8 homers, making his slugging % .764. For an OPS of 1.148. If he keeps that up, he'll rank in the top 3 in MLB. Not playing well? He's playing outstanding.
