I was one of them. Really good times back in the days. First it was Toys R Us on Westheimer/Hwy6, then Miami Subs, Sonics, etc. Rankin was always a hot spot as well, but a bit too underground for me.

A lot of people quit when the city started focusing their attention on racers and placed cops all over Westheimer. :(

Anyone remember the infamous Sonics police raid/bust? They basicalled blocked off all the exits at the Sonics/Kmart and arrested anyone. They faced a huge lawsuit and I think the people involved finally received their payment a year ago.

I loved cruising it back in the early to mid 80s.

Holy crap, that street is about the distance from Brownsville, Texas to Lincoln, Nebraska!! Over 1170 miles?!

Westheimer is only something like 40 or 50 miles, I think. There are streets in California longer than that.

Not saying that is what happened or should happen there, I was just giving an example of how they could make it illegal but I guess you could make anything illegal.

Is there a street in Austin named Westheimer? Or are you just a troll and living up to your rookie status?

I used to work out at the 24 hour fitness on Westheimer& Hayes in the late night early morning hours(12-2am) back in the 90s, I saw a lot drag racing, to me it wasn't cool at all, but to each his own!

According to Wiki, the Yonge street thing is wrong. They're claiming some highway is part of the street. I guess that's like claiming Westheimer is part of I-10 and thus goes from coast to coast.

I used to cruise Westheimer all the time. In addition to drag racing, it got quite ghetto. I used to see lotsa crazy stuff when cruising. Random girls getting naked, kissing, and dancing, people talking trash to each other, fighting with each other, lotsa fixed up cars, and there was even a driveby shooting at the Taco Cabana on Westheimer and Chimney Rock once too. I even picked up a girl once while cruising on Westheirmer too. When I lived in Houston, I would go to La Tapatia Taqueria right across from that Taco Cabana all the time...It stays open late, it's cheap, usually hot girls in there, and they're chicken breast tortas are the best

I think we have a generation gap in this thread regarding “cruising Westheimer”.

The older ones (like me) are talking about cruising the Montrose area during the 80's and the younger ones are talking about….I don't know, drag racing on the West side?

We cruised Westheimer back in the 80’s. It was a nice way for dumb suburban kids (like us) to see lots of…well, alternative lifestyles…from the safety of our locked cars. Really opened our eyes to life in the big city.

I'm not sure how old you are, but I'm 36, and I was referring specifically about the early 90's for me. (1990-91) We would essentially go between Chimney Rock and Gessner and find some strippers that had gotten off work. I swear, we'd find women to come back over to our places 50% of the time. (We lived in Swiss Village, FWIW.)

I don't know how long it is in actual miles, but gessner is continuous from below the southwest freeway to above 290.

Did a quick google search and Colfax Avenue in Denver is the longest continuous street at 26 miles.

I'm thinking Westheimer has to be at least 20 miles, though...if you include Westheimer Parkway which ends out at the Grand Parkway, you're talking about driving from Bagby to the far west Katy.

I-45 is longer than Westheimer, and it is the only "Intrastate" freeway.
