I'm getting contact lenses soon. I was wondering if any of you could impart some advice or handy tips I should know about handling and wearing them. How long is the adjustment period? How dangerous is it really? Apart from an eye infection if your hands are dirty, what other health concerns may i encounter? Also will the contacts affect the oxygen supply to the eye to the extent where it's detrimental? Thanks guys
Dangerous? I guess if your hands are dirty and you touch your eye, yeah, it can be dangerous. Just wash your hands very good. To be honest, I don't wash my hands as much as I should before handling my contacts and I have never had a problem, other than getting dirt in my eye. I started on soft lenses for the first time over a year ago after wearing glasses for 18 years and I have never looked back. Yes, you have to be very careful about handling them because they tear very easy. And don't fall asleep in them. I have a bad habit of forgetting to take them out before my late afternoon/early evening nap. Two hours later, and they are glued to my eyes. Overall, I would say it took me about 1-2 week to get use to them?
I had a bit of trouble in the beginning getting them in and out. It's always kind of weird putting your finger in your eye. But you get used to it and its not really a problem. Like the person before me said, unless if your contacts are specifically meant to sleep in, dont sleep with them in.
I'm assuming if it's stuck to the eye. You just put some eye dropper in to moisturise it and take it out?
Wash your hands before you handle them, but the best solution for contact lenses is Lasik eye surgery. Best money I ever spent on myself.
ask your eye doctor, there are too many diferent kinds of lenses for different types of eyeballs. gas permeable vs, soft. disposable vs. extended wear daily vs. weekly wear toric, etc... clean them daily
I was in 8th grade when I first got mine. Took me 5 hours trying to get em in on my own. Some people can pop them in standing straight up and looking in a mirror. I had to sit down at a table and looked down into a small mirror to see my finger was aimed at the absolute center of my pupil.
aussie, they are really really easy. And yes, if they get all dried feeling, you put a few drops in and have no problems. The only thing to watch out for it making sure your hands are freshly washed before you take them out or put them on. The germs are not the big worry, IMO, but if you've... I don't know, let's say, CUT UP JALAPENOS, and forgot about it and then messed with your contacts, you will be sorry. I say that from experience.
Regarding oxygen circulation, you should plan to wear your glasses 2-4 hours a day to give your eyes a chance to breath. Taking them off right before you go to bed doesn't work because you close your eyes to sleep and oxygen doesn't get in anyway. If you wear your contacts all the time and/or sleep with them on, then your eye will develop additional blood vessels to transport oxygen to the part of they eye you're depriving. When my sister had LASIK done and they made a slit in the outer film, all she could see was red because she had developed all these extra blood vessels from wearing her contacts too much.
B-Bob is right, wash your hands THOROUGHLY if you're handling any peppers or spicy food. Seriously, like wash them with soap for about a minute unless you want searing eye pain. With contacts, just make sure you wash your hands, clean the lenses thoroughly(until there's absolutely no dust or dirt) and put them on standing right next to a mirror. Just touch them lightly to the iris area and they should come right off, but it takes a week or so of practice.
other than what's already been said... NEVER sleep in them. this girl that works with me didnt listen to anyone until she developed an infection. she lost some vision. always take them out a lil bit before sleep to let oxygen in. i try not to put them in right after i get up. wait a little bit if it gets dry try to use drops made for contacts. remember it's your vision you are messing with..and you are putting a foreign object in your eye..so take care of it and you will be fine.
You can get contacts that allow more airflow. I use the O2 Optix, but I know there's another brand (Night and Day?) that allow people to wear contacts all day long. I take them out before sleeping though.
I wear 2 week Oasys. They're really comfortable and feel like I have nothing in my eyes. As for contact solution I use CLEAR CARE. It's the best. Way better than regular contact solution.
get this stuff called clear care, and Never put anything with a red tip in your eye, I learned that the hard way... Clear Care- Hydrogen peroxide solution is for cleaning, disinfecting, rinsing and storing your contact lenses. With this product, you place your lenses in the provided basket and rinse them, then place the basket in its cup and fill the cup with solution to clean and disinfect your lenses. Some lens holders for hydrogen peroxide systems have a built-in neutralizer (to convert the hydrogen peroxide to water, so it doesn't sting your eyes), but with others you need to add a neutralizing tablet.
Sometimes, although not often, certain brands of contacts don't bode well with some solutions. Generally, try and use Opti-Free or Renu, because they are the most commonly used, and marketed. <br> Other than that, it takes like a week or two to get used to them. Try not to overly blink after you first start using them, it's kinda hard, but they'll feel better fast if you don't.
wow i've never heard that advice despite the all articles i've read about contacts. the part about giving the eyes a few hours rest i mean but it definitely sounds right. don't the major brands now claim that the technology is better now than ever and allow enough oxygen to permeate the film? and no lasik for me. my eyesight hasn't stablised yet.
Last year in college I kept contacts in for like a month at a time. Yea, that was bad. But I've been good at taking them out everyday now.
I wore contacts from maybe 9th grade or so until I was 29, so about 15 years. I stopped for two reasons - I was starting to get red eyes, and they started to have problems shifting around on my eyes. I was actually driving back from a golf tournament and one of my contacts slipped up behind my eyeball, leaving me with one-eyed vision on the freeway. I figured that I might eventually screw up my eyes with them, and since I was already married there was no reason to not just wear glasses.
