I thought the movie was good, but not as great as i expected it to be based off some of the reviews. I really liked the little kids that played Jamal and Salim -- i thought they did an awesome job. For once, the subtitles accurately translated what they were saying in hindi (most english subtitles in bollywood movies are just plain horrible). But my problem with them was that they were way too sanitized. The language the little kids were using was way more crass, and there were a lot of curse words spoken that didnt make it into the subtitles. i thought the book would clarify some of these types of things, but from what i've seen so far, the book is quite a bit different: *the main character's name isnt Jamal -- its Ram Mohammed Thomas *he isnt muslim -- he actually doesnt follow any religion (or you could say he follows them all). The religion he claims changes based on the people hes hanging out with *the main character is an orphan; Salim is his friend, not brother *his narration of the life experiences that allowed him to answer the gameshow questions is made to his lawyer, not to some policemen *the second question isnt about what Ram holds in his hands; its about what is usually written on a Cross (INRI)
I really like that actor who plays the police chief in the movie. (Irfan Khan). I remember seeing him The Namesake and in Darjeeling Limited as well.
Good movie. 8/10 If you liked this movie, I highly recommend City of God aka Cidade De Deus. I liked that movie a little better.
Just watched the movie...great movie...but i just didnt understand the whole shiva thing...didnt make sense...i guess it was just a kid dressed as shiva as part of the attack? idk...but was a great movie...
City of God is my favorite movie, but I don't see the equation. Slumdog Millionaire is meant to be a redemptive, rags-to-riches story that leaves the audience feeling good. City of God is an unrepentant crime film. The cinematography is the same, but the plots are very different. And yes, I've bumped this thread because I saw Slumdog Millionaire tonight. A very enjoyable viewing if I do say so. I didn't have the gumption to start another thread about it, though.
Not Shiva - it was Rama. And I'm not 100% sure on this, I didn't think it was a statute, I thought it was a kid dressed like Rama who came during the attack. But they could've also brought a statue with them or there could've been one in the community (just because it is predominantly muslim, doesn't mean there are no Hindus - I mean it is India afterall). As for those who complain it isn't realistic enough...honestly, when did you last see a movie that you truly enjoyed that was realistic? This has been a very weak year for movies - given that I can see this winning best picture. It wouldn't have stood a chance last year though. It was very good, but won't go down as one of my all time favorites.
Dude I've been waiting for someone to start a thread on it. I bet no one else has seen it but us guys already on the thread. It's such an underrated movie but I dunno if it will win anything at the Golden Globes.
1) He heard the computer technician call on the show, so everyone at the company needed to do so...he called in and got lucky...destiny 2) Mumbai 3) No, just sentimental purposes...Gandhi said Oh God when he died, and he died on a couple of rupees with gandhi's picture...always expected in bollywood films...
you're right...it was amitabh bacchan...but it's actually called 'banega crorepati'... he hosts it, and occasionally shah rukh khan hosts it as well....
its actually called kaun benega crorepati either way good to see it get some awards at the golden globes
