So on Saturday evening, as I'm sitting on the toilet, a pungent (actually, rancid would be more accurate) smell wafts through the air. i know what you're thinking....great, another thread about bowel movements. oh, how i wish. the good thing is it didn't last long. then, later on in the night my labrador is acting a little strange. he's just pacing back and forth in front of the bathroom door. i notice the smell again, except this time its lingering. i went under the house to look for what, i don't know. a broken pipe? what the hell is that smell? looked for a good 20 minutes and nothing. i woke up this morning and it was worse than ever. since had some natural lighting this time i thought i'd have more luck finding whatever was causing it. nope, came up emptyfigured, i might as well watch football all day and try again. it took me a good half hour before i finally found this: what's that you don't see anything? how about this? is that hair, you ask? why yes, yes it is. and cute little tail too. and this would be it's naked body, after 40 tries of poking, prodding, and pulling with a makeshift hook of clotheshangers (think No Country For Old Men) after i bagged it: and here's a close up: what is it? oh, just your typical possum playing dead behind a cast iron bath tub, except it wasn't playing.
Ha how amusing. I got a frantic call from my mother last week alerting me to the fact that there was a possum in the area below the house making horrific noises. Really wasn't much I could do a few hundred miles away. I guess it's a good thing it wasn't dead.
it took me about 45 minutes to get the decayed body within arms reach. i had to walk away about 10 times because the stench was unbearable. and it only took me another 30 minutes to gather up the nerves to stick my hand in there to grab it by the tail and pull it out. barf!!!
you know, we actually heard wierd sounds a couple of weeks ago and thought something was in the walls. the sound went away so you figured it was gone. i guess in a way it was. but not like i'd imagine.
