    Tough call.

    hmm...

the background music to Pitfall II for the Atari was excellent (considering the technology).

...the coin-op version of Pac-man had sound effects which became audio icons.

The background music to the coin-op of Moon Patrol was excellent.

Yup. The Pac-Man death sound is my vote for #1. Unless you count songs, in which case the Super Mario song is your winner.

Not the OoT soundtrack. But the Zelda main theme song, yes.

This is the best video game theme music ever:

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/0KQkBXjk6w4&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/0KQkBXjk6w4&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

BTW, I need to know if this music is based on an actual classical composition - need composer and name of the original composition. Anybody know?

If we're talking songs now, the DKC2 soundtrack was AMAZING, as was FF6. But I think everyone loved this track from Ducktales back in the day:

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/MPkhhLC1tf8&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/MPkhhLC1tf8&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

The key question being SOUND EFFECT, I'd also go w/ Pac-Man's death sound or, being the huge fighting game addict I am, 'Shoryuken!'.

I like how some arenas use the 'Mario gets a coin' sound when people hit a free throw.

    1) all Sonic 2 music...seriously i heard somewhere that the neptunes collaborated on some of that.

    2) MK's Shao Khan laugh/ or "toasty"

    3) Altered Beast's "rise from your grave!"

    4) Ganon's laugh (when he looked like a pig can't remember if it was Zelda I or II)

    5) Double Switch - "you let those suckers get to the breaker box!"

I like all the old fighting games where they said everything in a muffled voice.
