What was the actual reason for the logo change in 95/96?

As far as I know, the Rockets are the only team to undergo a complete logo change after a championship.

Teams like the Bulls, Celtics, Lakers, Pistons, Spurs, Portland, have kept the same look forever.

So why did Les want to do it?

Because the old jerseys were dated.

The teams you mentioned have timeless uniforms. Our championship ones screamed 70s almost as loudly as the blue ones screamed 90s.

Maybe if they had made up their mind between upper and lower case characters, they'd still be around.

Rest assured, if those other teams had

    BOStOn

    BUlls

    LAKeRS

on their jerseys, they wouldn't have stuck forever either.

I meant that the Detroit championship teams have the same look as today.

The Pistons actually blended those two styles. The old uniforms and colors with the 90s lettering.

My guess is that Les wanted to bring in more revenue. New logos and jerseys force people to stay current. No one wants to show up with an old style jersey when everyone else is wearing the new style.

The current shoulder cuts suck and the stripes make players look like they came straight out of The Jetsons or The Power Rangers - basically, space suits.

    I like the logo, though.

Finally someone who has the right answer.

Bear in mind that the Rockets were THE team in Houston- not the crappy Astros.

We won 2 titles in a row and our fan interest was never higher. Les felt like striking while the iron is hot by making new logos and jerseys that most of the rabid fanbase would buy. If we stuck with the older uniforms, who buys new stuff?

I have a feeling that next season, the jerseys will change a little, maybe add an alternate, and an alternate logo, and a little homage to the past like the Chargers did in the NFL with the powder blue.

The logo change and the new jerseys were probably well under way before the first championship was won.

The league requires some kind of 3 year process for applying for a new logo. Despite this, somehow someone still thought putting hakeen in space pajamas was a good idea.

I remember that the Rockets had a public competition to design the logo. What the winner actually proposed and what the Rockets actually used were quite a bit different. The winning design wasn't nearly as bad as what we ended up with.

I like our new jerseys. I liked the championship jerseys also. The flying dildo jerseys were pretty lame.

I just wanna see a retro night where we were an old San Diego uni....

We made the switch because we had just won 2 championships and nobody outside of Houston wanted to wear Rockets gear. Most of us look at it from a vacuum and have an affinity for the championship logo/jerseys but everybody else thought the ketchup and mustard combo was hideous. Les wasn't capitalizing on the Rockets success like he thought he should so he changed the colors/logo hoping to drive up merchandise sales in markets outside of Houston (hometown fans are going to buy gear regardless). Unfortunately he went in completely wrong direction.
