    I Am So F*cked

Well, as I get ready to have to go back to work after such a nice vacation (I have been off since last Wednesday), I have been eagerly anticipating working out again on Monday (tomorrow).

As a matter of fact, I had mentioned in an earlier thread that I was trying to get over forearm splints. Well, those have about gone completely away, but now I have a bigger problem...I got a f*cking pulled muscle in the right upper part of my back!

I have never been a very flexible person, physically, and it happened last night. All I did was take my shirt off, but I must have done it in an awkward fashion. Well, after staying up pretty late last night, I go to bed. Well, I had a pretty horrible night. I never imagined in a million years that a muscle strain like that would make it that hard for me to sleep with. Finally, I got out a heating pad and slept the best albeit it was only for 2 and a half hours.

I have GOT to work out tomorrow, but I don't know if it is going to be possible with this damn strain. Any ideas of how to get around it? Am I truly f*cked because of this?

What do you mean you "GOT TO"?

If you have a pulled back muscle, then you need to heal.

I guess I don't understand why this is so urgent that you have to work out tomorrow. What are you...working out for a Mr. Olympia contest or something?

A few days off to heal is not going to ruin you.

Maybe I'm being overdramatic, but I would take time off to heal. A pulled muscle could easily deteriorate into a severely pulled muscle, and even into muscle tears. You definitely don't need that!

    Surf and RM:

I guess I love to lift, and I'm afraid that taking after taking a week off, that going any longer without lifting is going to really set me back.

Actually, wouldn't it help the muscle if I exercise it (like doing pull-ups) but maybe not exercise it so strenuously?

I guess I can still workout the other parts of my body that I do on Monday like biceps and abs.

It's just that I can't stand getting a pulled muscle/muscle strain more than anything & I'm chomping at the bit to get back to lifting.

Let it heal for an extra day or two Manny. Get back in the gym on Wednesday. In the meantime try some running just to keep your cardio up and to put a little strain on the back to test it out. Trust me, you'll be thankful especially if it still hurts a few days from now.

I realize I'm going to sound like an absolute wuss for admitting to this...but...here goes:

i pulled a muscle in my back sneezing on the plane ride back to Houston from my honeymoon.

fortunately it was on the way HOME FROM my honeymoon...not on the way TOO my honeymoon! :)

but what kind of idiot pulls a muscle sneezing?? i refuse to forgive myself for that !! :)

I agree u should let it heal for a couple days, if u try lifting on it you will make it worse, but why are u so anxious at getting back at lifting?

yeah seriously MR, take a few days off. if you work out now, youll make it worse and then wont be able to lift for a lot longer. part of working out is doing it RIGHT. not doing it ALWAYS.

think of it like this : if you really love a song, dont listen to it 24-7 or else youll get sick of it and you wont be able to enjoy it anymore. crappy analogy but i hope you get the idea.

Virtually any exercise you do will somehow involve your abs and back. Let it rest for 2-3 days, stretch well, and do a light workout. Try doing 10-20 minutes of cardio first to get your blood flowing.

Sort of related. I took up tennis last summer to play with my teenage son. Hadn't played in about 25 years. I had been exercising, so my wind was ok. The problem is I have developed a "tennis elbow" Damndest injury I've ever had. Six months later it hasn't healed. As soon as I realized what was happening I stopped playing. 98% of the time it doesn't hurt . Everything seems ok for awhile like I'm recovering and then I reinjure it by doing some little movement with my arm like washing my hair in the shower and it instantly seems to go almost back to square one.

Doe anyone know how to cure a tennis elbow?

I've done the same thing on two occasions Manny. I was doing chest butterflies and went a little too low for my own good. Of course you dont feel nothing right away, but after a couple of hours you feel like screaming at the top of your lungs! The first time it happened I didnt think much about it and worked out the very next day anyways. Bad bad bad decision. I could not work out for a week or two. The second time it happened, I just rested for 2-3 days. I just did cardio and some abs meanwhile. I was fine after those 2-3 days.

Like you I hate missing any lifting. For the first time in about 2 years I have not lifted for a week. This past week I've been busy with school and various other things. If I miss multiple workouts I feel as if I've gone back to ground zero. :(

Exactly, 03. I have already taken off a week, and there is this fear that if I have miss the next 2 or 3 days, then I'll be back at ground zero.

My back is actually feeling good, and I'm going to try and see what happens. Obviously, if there is pain in doing pull-ups or lat pulldowns or any other exercise, then I guess I'll have to cut the workout short. But I really hope it doesn't come down to that.

Well if you are intent on working out at least make sure its a short one and with less weights.
