Not really sure what the OP's point is here. With a hobbled McGrady, we don't have anyone else who would even be in the discussion as the team's best player. That still doesn't justify building an offense where you live and die with Yao because he's just as likely on most nights to give you 9 and 4 as he is to give you 29 and 14.
just checking out Grizzlies same stat. Obviously their worst players are: Gasol, Mayo,Gay,Arthur,Lowry. Grizzlies should be talking about Championship if those are the worst players they have.
That is because he is........ When the ball goes through Yao, with crunch time Tracy P and R's, we are at our very best............. Yao's offense will carry us and keep us close, but Tracy and Ron will ultimately win us games in the end..........
This is the first time he's leading the team in this stat though. However, like any stat, there is so much more behind the numbers that contributes to the result of this stat. This is what statistical analysis is for though (so don't just brush off stat as useless)!
First of all Yao Ming and Tmac are supposed to be the team's franchise players. Since Tmac is a shell of his former self, then obviously he's the best player...that's like saying Yao Ming's visa tells us that he's Chinese Secondly the +/- stat is useless. You can't use it for any meaningful analysis whatsoever because it doesn't just reflect that particular person's performance, you also have to take the other players and the other team's players into account. Take the Houston Rockets-La Clippers game last Dec. 3 for example: Yao Ming had 24 pts on 6-8 fg and 12-13 fts. He also had 10 rebs, 2 blocks, 3 assists, 1 steal and only 1 turnover. His +/-? +5 Steve Novak had 2 pts on 1-1 fg and 1 reb in 9 mins of play. His +/-? +6 Are you telling me Steve Novak impacted his team more than Yao Ming did his? Lol
Yeah but my problem with the +/- stat is it requires more analysis than its worth. In the game above the reason why Yao Ming's stat was so low was because Artest's, Hayes's and Luis's +/- pulled Yao's +/- down (and vice versa). When you have to rationalize the +/- stat like that then the +/- actually gives you more work to do rather than being a tool that helps you better assess the player's performance. If that happens you're better off looking at other statistics IMHO. P.S. Wow I'm a member. Yay for me lol
Technically, Shane Battier could be the best player based off this stat. Battier's Per Minute Plus/Minus is +.248 (meaning Rockets score +.248 per minute more than the opponent when he's in). Compared to Yao's +.185. Its saying if Shane Battier plays all 48 minutes, Rockets outscore their opponents 12 points a game. Compared to only 9 points for Yao. So Battier is the better player
