You all are saying that this Chinnese player is going to make us trade up in the draft maybe even our #1 pick and Kenny Thomas for him? cmon i know hes a freak one in a lifetime player but i rather have done that with PAU GASOL atleast europeans are known to ball i havent seen not even one good Asian player to be trading for, i say take him to Greece and if he dominates then lets talk...
If we had asked you a year ago about trading up to take Pau Gasol, what would you have said? 'Why waste all that for some Euro who's too soft to play in the NBA?' That's what most people said about him. Why judge a player by those he plays among? NBA scouts are paid good money to evaluate people's talent and potential. They watch the player; they don't just read the box score. They all seem to think Yao has got the goods to be great here. Why not trust their professional evaluation over some vague stereoptype of the level of competition in this or that foreign league?
I thought Wang zhi zhi looked good last nite. the dallas announcer said he was 17/24 from 3 point land over the last week or so.
Well first of all the European league has had proven star players before. So Pau Gasol was playing against an already known talent level. Remember these countries took the Dream teams to school. China on the otherhand has never been known to posses an abundance of "ballers". When David Benoit is one of the best players in the league then you know there is no competition over there. The argument ElVenezolano is making is we don't know squat about Ming because of the level of competition he has been up against but Gasol we at the very least knew he was doing well against above average players. I don't want anyone to think I am saying Ming will be a bad player, because I'm not. I just understand what Elvis is saying. With that said though I must admit I have my doubts that he will last more than 3 years without going down with a knee injury.
What "we" know is very little. It wasn't that long ago that the question would be "Why does anyone want to take the time to develop that skinny kid from Africa?" How injury-prone he ends up being is a valid question. Anybody read anything about Ming's history with that?
Jose Ortiz was a spaniard drafted in the first round by the Jazz in 1987 out of Oregon St, and played in the NBA.
I've read many responses on this BBS that doubt Ming's abilities, because he plays against weak competition. That's a valid criticism, I guess. The thing that confuses me is that many of these same posters highly tout the high school kids that declare every year also. Doesn't the same "weak competition" argument still hold with them?
He also swatted t-mo's shot, whatever that's worth. I was just saying he handles the ball well and was a bit stronger and wquicker than I thought. Not a bad athlete, for an Asian guy. As for Ming, his #'s are phenomenal. I don't care if he averaged that against high schoolers. That is incredible.
So El, Arvydas Sabonis and Sharunas Marchiulonis (sp?) were not worth going after because they were Asian players?
