However odd the Clippers name may be, one thing is for sure: they need an updated look (logo/colors/script/jerseys). Talk about boring.
Names of some NBA teams are really dull. Most of the time they have nothing to do with basketball. I think Utah Jazz are far the dumbest, imagine if you have San Francisco Rock n Roll or Las Vegas Hip Hop. I know it makes sense they're originally from NO which has Jazz tradition but it's still dull. Hornets? Raptors? Bulls? What's this? Animal farm?
I once saw in a magazine that the reason why Milwaukee's basket-ball team is named Bucks is because back in the time, the team wasn't making a lot of money and the owners tought that if they named the team ''Bucks'' (Dollar,Money) it would help. The weirdest thing ? It worked very well.
GS Warriors - used to be the Philly Warriors. Can you guess why they were named Warriors now? As for the Golden State moniker, when the crossed the bay to Oakland from San Francisco's Cow Palace, the chose a name to reference all areas so as nort to lose the fan base in San Francisco. California's nickname is "the Golden State," which fits alot better then the "Bay Area Warriors."
The San Diego Rockets were also named following a contest. Space was kinda a big deal in the 60's. BTW: Should this conversation be a permanent sticky? "What are Celts? What are Knicks?" Christ people, read!
Golden State is actually San Francisco Bay Area and there is a large population of a$$ warriors there. hence the name Warriors.
And before they moved to Cincinnati they were the Rochester Royals. From my understanding there was a contest to name the team and the name Royals was the winner.
Nice thread. A lot of interesting information. In Hong Kong, we have 2 streams when translating Mavericks, one translated them as the direct meaning of a calf while the other a pony. Traditional knowledge is that a maverick was refering to a calf but they put a pony into their logo, so which one do you think is more appropriate? Also, I wonder those Irish in Boston call their team as "Cal-tics" or "Sell-tics"?
"Sell-tics", there are actually Rugby and Footy teams in Ireland that pronounce it "Sell-tics" too. Weird, huh?
LOL. I thought it's all because of the animals, then it turned out to be a weird answer but pretty good explanation. I think the owners dreamt of making heaps of bucks at that moment. P.S. nice thread, heaps of information.
