Why? I don't know. They guy has some raw skills but still can't hit a jumper enough to be counted on. He won't get an agent and says he will pull out of the draft if the interest is not there. os
smart move in my opinion..let's him test out his talent and play ball against some lottery picks..He'll be back at U. of H next year knowing what he needs to work on (although it is quite obvious)and having his name on the radar for next year. It's a win-win situation for him.
If I were him I wouldn't wait to pull out until after being humiliated by not being drafted. Instead try to get some publicity then at the last moment possible pull out. He has never been on any of the top 60 lists that I've seen. Maybe this will get him some looks. He has not developed tremendously since his frosh year. He needs to bulk up and become a force on the glass and in the paint this coming year. There are so few low post players in the NBA and he has the raw skills and instincts to make it.
I went to high school with this guy, and granted, the opposition's talent level was a little suspect, George was just a dominant player. He was, I believe our 4 at the time, being 6'8", but now he's at the 3 for Uof H. George has unmeasurable potential, I believe, however some of you are right. It's a good idea to test the draft and see where he ranks nationally among the top players, and then withdraw and play his senior year with a better understanding of what he needs to accomplish to be considered a lotto pick in the 2003 draft. I thought after a season or two of college ball, George would be one of the better players in the country, but he has yet to display his overall potential at the college level. I don't really follow U of H basketball but from what I hear, they should be pretty talented which should let George spread his wings and fly.
George lacks SF skills. I think he can maybe be a good energy guy off the bench much like Jerome Williams. At Elkins, Williams was a beast on the glass and blocking shots. I thought he would bloom into a lotto pick by his Jr year.
Back at Elkins, George was the man, on and off the court. He is one of the nicest all around people I have ever met and a great student. I'm so glad I still get to go to school with him. He's such a good person! He was really great in HS, but he never seriously considered being drafted right out of school (I don't even know that he could've), which I really admired. Does anyone know how he might have fared if he had though? I thought he was somewhat highly ranked at the times, but I really have no idea..I just knew he was good. He had a lot of potential then, but it really hasn't developed. While I still think he has potential, can he really improve on his weaknesses in just a year (I really have no clue...I like basketball but know little about abilities)? I do know that he's a really hard worker from having classes with him, so he's got that working for him at least. However, he told me at one time that education was the most important thing, which is why he excelled in school and went to college. I'm sure not having an NBA career would be very disappointing, he's a really positive guy and I'm sure he'll succeed in whatever he chooses to do. It seems like a good idea to me! Good luck George!
George was a consesus top 30 player coming out of highscool. http://home.nc.rr.com/rsci/rsci100-99.txt He was highly regarded coming out of high school but not high regarded enough to legitimely consider the draft. As a uofh fan, i love george. It refreshing to see someone as talented as he is, play so unselfishly. You almost wish he would be more selfish at times. The problem with his game, that at this point might keep him from the nba, is his jumpshot. He kinds of slings the ball when he shoots, which leads to an inconsistent shot. Imo, what he need to do is come back to school, and spent the whole off season working on correcting his form. He is not shaq, there is no reason why he can't become a good even great shooter. If he comes back next year and shows he can consistent knock down a 18-20 ft open jumper, he's a first round pick. I'm just afraid that if he does enter the draft this year, that he'll be selling himself short, cause there is almost no chance that he'll be drafted in the first round. I thing i am worried about though is "agents" or sleezy hangers on, telling him his stock is overinflated. But by all accounts, george has a good head on his shoulder and i hope good people around him. It would be great if he were drafted in the first round, but if not, i think he could do a lot better if he comes back for a year. I know the coogs desperately need him
