So my life has gotten pretty pathetic. I know I said so in the title, but I don’t care. Just deal with it. As many of you may remember, I’m in nursing school at OU. Not the main campus in Norman or in OKC, but at a satellite campus in Lawton. Still, I attend a university with a student body of probably somewhere around 4K to 5K. So despite being in a small-ish town of around 120K, there’s still a college atmosphere as well as a huge military presence being that Ft. Still is here as well. I mention these things just to illustrate that I’m not in a ‘sleepy town’ where nothing happens. Anyway. My life pretty much consists of nursing school. I have little to no interaction with any students outside of those in the OU nursing program with me. Again, I say this just to give a better picture of my life. The trouble is this: NOTHING HAPPENS. Seriously. No one goes out. No one hangs out. No one studies together. No one wants to go bowling, to the movies, lunch, dinner, out to play pool, or ANYTHING. And after a semester of this, I’m losing my friggin’ MIND. Don’t get me wrong: I have friends here. They’re friends who don’t do a damn THING. EVER. But they’re friends nonetheless. And this program isn’t easy. Far from it. I don’t have a whole ton of free time, and neither do my classmates. Nursing school is a b**** and a half. But I gotta unwind after a week of wiping asses, giving injections, reading 8 million pages in various textbooks, sorting through stacks of Power Points, and wearing my hair in a freaking bun because it‘s nearly to my ass and I have to have it off my collar for clinicals. I would think that others would feel the same way. All my friends in H-Town I’ve ranted to about this agree. It’s just….weird. And I really don’t think it’s me. I’ve always made friends easily, at least when I have an ‘in,’ i.e. meeting people through other people, or through school, work, etc. I turned 33 barely a week ago and most people put my age between 25-27, so it‘s not like I‘m Creepy Old Guy. I work hard, I earn praise from my instructors, and my grades reflect both. I’m not ugly. I don’t smell bad. “But Lynus,” some of you might say. “You‘re a guy in nursing school. You should be surrounded by young women, who, if their lives are anything like yours, should be eager to at least simply hang out with one of the 3 guys out of 50 some-odd students.” And you’d be right. It’s like I’m in some weird Twilight Zone where the last thing college students do is ACT LIKE FREAKIN‘ COLLEGE STUDENTS!!!! I’ve pretty much given up on asking people to hang out. Christ, it’s not like I’m wanting to go to keggers every weekend and slack in school (I have perfect attendance and nearly a 4.0, thankyouverymuch). So I don’t know what to do. I’ve gone out. Alone. Which makes me feel like the Mayor of Loser-ville. I’ve met people, but nothing ever gets past the “nice to meet you” phase and simple conversation, and this was before I started feeling sorry for myself, so any potential pathetic vibes weren’t in place yet. And I won't try to make like I'm some Don Juan, either as far as game goes, but I'm certainly no slouch, either. I’m surrounded by women, but I have no prospects. I know a ton of people, but I don’t really feel like I have any friends and I have zero social life. I’m relegated to drinking alone in the dark and crying myself to sleep. Okay, so that bit isn’t true, but oh my good god am I BORED!!!! Argh!!!! So that's that. Thanks for listening or reading, rather. I guess I really needed to rant/vent/get this off my chest. I can’t WAIT to get back to Houston. Ugh.
Oh god, I went to Fort Sill for my buddy's graduation... Lawton is a ****hole. I could not wait to get the hell out of there and back to civilization.
Lawton is a dump, to be sure, but that's certainly doesn't mean there's nothing to do or that students wouldn't want to unwind after a week of bathing old people and cleaning up poo.
I could never be able to live in a small town. I commend you for that and being well caught up in nursing school.
I've been to Oklahoma City and Tulsa several times. It's different; can't quite put my finger on it. OKC has got to be the most boring city in the world and the people make me want to yawn. Tulsa is only slightly better. I'm a boring person myself and even I think Oklahoma is mind-numblingly dull. I feel for ya man.
I feel for you man. Lawton may not be the worst town in the world, but it's not that great either. If you feel like making the drive to Norman I'm always down to catch a Rockets game with a fellow clutchfan.
I am sorry to hear that Lynus. All my friends are married with rugrats so a night out is dinner and that's it. But at least they occasionally do things. You will just have to hangout here with the clutchfans more often
Have you tried just hanging out at their places? If the town is a dump and people would rather stay in, then try something like a movie night.
Thanks y'all. Sooner423, I might take you up on that after the xmas break. And Oski....yup. Tried that, too. Been to several peoples homes. Like I said....no one does a damn thing. No one even watches OU games except for one girl who I barely know, and she has her whole crew she rolls to the games with. She and her family have season tickets.
Sorry you're bored. Suggestions 1. Workout. Either at a local gym or at school if there is one. Benefit of better health, decreased stress, if you join a class at a gym you may meet some people. 2. Play video games. Some of the games these days are a blast and huge time killers i.e. no boredom 3. Get NBA league pass. Watch all Rocket games. It will give you something to look forward to. 4. Get an iPhone. The thing is amazing. Definitely will keep you busy and entertained. 5. Go to church. Meet people. My faith helps me through tough times. Hang in there. Your time at school is only temporary and you are entering a profession with good job security.
hmm...it might be a sign of things to come. The people i know who are already nurses don't really go out that much either.
I realize this is zero consolation at all, but when ya get back we will get some fools from on here together and go bowling and drinking one weekend. I even promise to bowl left-handed if folks are intimidated by my awesomeness. --><--- I got no answers for ya as far as your situation, I figger you were just venting anyway.
After you get your certifications and all, you'll be glad you did it. There's many losers out there like me who are similarly bored AND have no prospects in line, double pathetic. Once you get yourself back around familiarity again and family (if you have it), things will pick up again. If its just having nice people around to gab with, church I found is easy source of that. Too bad I'm agnostic though... See, there's worse out there

yo homeskittle You know where I bowl every Friday, it is less than 10 minutes from your place of employment. Tell me what Friday yall want to come out, league ends ~9:30. it aint up to me to put together a bowling night for the board...especially when most of yall live out the other direction from my haunts (I bowl at Armadilla in Pasadena and Alpha in CL/Webster) if you want to spearhead a CF.net bowling night, Ill come out, but I dont know the places out there or what would be central to most of the interested parties so having me plan it seems silly. and to add to my Dude-like bowling awesomeness, I have averaged over 90% striking percentage in league lately Im about due another 300.
