That was indeed the greatest tragedy in sports that did not involve severe injury or death.

travesty? maybe is the better word.

wrt tragedy: another one is the entire Evansville bball team dying in a plane crash. And then the soccer games where the stands collapsed and the field became a temporary morgue.

another one was the Seoul Olympic, middle weight boxing semi-finals between Hollyfield and a Korean.

Hollyfield was out-punching the Korean like 150-5. the ref stepped in to break up the two fighters, just as Hollyfied was unleashing a punch For throwing a punch during the break, Hollyfied was disqualified.

Greatest tragedy - probably not, but I do remember watching these games and not believing how bad they were getting screwed. It reminded me of all the times the Rockets have been screwed by bad refereeing too. Plus, I hate the Fakers soooooooooo much.

    Nice find cwebster.

The 2005 Rockets-Mavs NBA Playoff series right at the top of Tim Donaghey's list of scandals. If only the Rockets tanked a little (like Sacramento who had the 4th seed all season) to get some revenge and face Seattle who didn't have a big man down low. The Spurs would have been an interesting 2nd round match up, easier than Phoenix.

Team match ups and player match ups mean everything in the playoffs.

The 3rd time it wasn't the refs - it was William Jones, general secretary of FIBA, who ordered the clock reset.

He was later quoted as saying:
"The Americans have to learn how to lose"

And the Americans refused to accept their silver medals, which are still being held in a vault in Switzerland - AND have ordered in their wills that NOBODY accept one on their behalf at any time.

    Cry babies!!!

    Jim Thorpe's Olympic medals.

    Roberto Clemente.

    Knute Rockne's plane crash.

    Thurman Munson.

    Hank Gathers.

    Brian Piccolo.

    Pat Tillman.

    Kim Perrot.

In my younger days, the JR Richard stuff was as tragic as anything. And Dickie Thon.

Adelman got cheated in 2002... the Rockets got cheated in 2005

It would be nice for the Rockets and Adelman to be champions sooner or later.
