I am curious, now that the cold war is basically over, why have we not normalized relations with Cuba? Do you guys think it is now time to do this?

I think it is high time that we normalize relations with Cuba and get those Casinos, resorts and Cuban cigars available to Americans.

    What do you think?

    NO WAY

The price of cuban cigars will skyrocket.

As it is now they are cheaper than anything legal in the US.

Cuba was one of our biggest mistakes. We had gotten high on our horse post WWII with establishing puppet governments all over the map, and were knee deep in Cuba, snuggling up to the dictator that was nice to us (Batista), providing arms to the factions we liked at a given moment, failed assassination attempts, getting in bed with the mafia, and the Bay of Pigs failed coup attempt.

Great job, Eisenhower/Kennedy/CIA. Way to show that we're the good guys.

I think we're intentionally waiting for Castro to die before normalizing relations. He may have never been a good guy for the people, but we shoved him into Soviet arms and we're 70% of the reason we've got hostile relations with them. Make nice with the new regime and you don't have to apologize.

I think this is probably the case of waiting for Castro to die.
Politically Obama has enough to do without ticking off Cubans in South Florida. You would think that by now they would realize that they did not gain much by keeping us from opening up to Cuba. Castro would be long done if we had done so.

Certainly we made mistakes, but Castro wasn't exactly forthcoming with his intentions either. Eisenhower actually backed off support for Batista because Castro claimed to be pro-democratic. Didn't actually turn out that way.

However, yes - we should go ahead and normalize.

As they have proven in China, a communist government can run a capitalist country pretty well.

So long as Cubans living in the States are not allowed to buy land in Cuba then yes. The real Cubans don't like them at all. If they come back they will exploit the poorer people, which because Castro didn't allow them to do so is why they left in the first place.

i don't see how we could or why we should regulate that, something like that should be up to the cuban government (castro or the successor). certainly it is taking advantage of being in a better financial position, but has that not been the practice here?

I've always found it amusing how america likes to bully small countries like cuba (embargo) and iraq/afgh (wmd and terrorism) but china can send toys with lead in them and milk products that will kill and do nothing. The cuban embargo only hurt the citizens, not the govt.

You would have to think Obama knows how the country feels about this.....

I am tired of smuggling Cuban cigars back from the UK....I want them here....and I want to be able to fly to Cuba to gamble......

not really. They proved a political party named The Communist Party can run a capitalist country pretty well. not a communist party.

who gives a crap what they call themselves?

And if Cuba was still a cesspool of corruption dictatorship and tyranny afterward that would make them different from half the rest of South American governments how?

Somehow, I don't think this poll is a representative sample.
