85 series plasmas are very good. Panasonic plasmas are second only to Pioneers but you pay a lot more for Pioneer.

Dont buy from Best buy though. That place is a ripoff.

Pioneer is good. But I don't see how BB is a ripoff they offer as cheap of a price as anyone else. You don't need 1080p on that model either. If you can find 720p cheaper go for it.

Same tv is on Amazon for $1029 total. No tax and free shipping. Best Buy is what $1199 plus tax? Close to $1300.

Its an excellent tv. For that size its probably one of the best you can get.

Got my Samsung LN52A750 for $2300 on Amazon including shipping. At Best Buy it was selling for $3000 plus tax and shipping. Would have been close to $900-$1000 more if I got it from there.

My friend just got a Samsung PN58A550 from Amazon for $2375 including shipping. Price at Best Buy at that point was $3600 after deliver and taxes.

So yeah most of the time Best Buy is a rip off compared to Amazon.

If thats the case then someone should say Amazon has the best deal, not Best Buy is a ripoff. Especially considering they price match.

Ummmm...Best Buy will not price match on a deal like that. If its close by $50 or so then they will do it. But definitely not a tv like that.

    Per wiki:

A ripoff (or rip-off) is a bad deal. Usually it refers to an incident in which a person pays too much for something.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rip_off

So yeah, Best Buy is a ripoff.

BB is a rip off in most cases. Although, some times you can find better deals at certain stores.

I'm setting to buy after xmas.
basic questions: don't some people say LCDs are better?

ziggy: Why'd you say "You don't need 1080p on that model either."

What are you going to be doing most with your tv?

    Video games
    bluray movies
    HD channels

Is your room dark or light?

Do you care about size or clarity?

1080p does not really matter in tv's below 40 inches. 42 is cutting it close.

For color depth/reproduction, plasmas were always ahead of LCD's, but LCD's have closed the gap. Black levels and viewing angles on LCD's were lacking, but they've also improved in that regard as well. More companies are producing large-screen LCD's now vs. about 3.5-4 years ago when I bought my plasma.

There's hardly any noticeable difference for most people between 1080p vs. 720p on sets less than 50" and if you're sitting further than about 8-9 feet away. There's also very little source material that's broadcast in 1080p outside of something like Bluray movies. The only argument for 1080p is if you're upscaling to 1080p in which case you're just getting fake/interpolated pixels anyway.

^ thanks R0ckets03 and Dr of Dunk

    to answer R0ckets03 questions:

    pretty much strictly HD Channels.
Defused, Light room, ie windows but no direct sunlight to worry about.
Clarity over size. I'm interested in best clarity available.

I really like my Panasonic 32" flat crt; I thought it had same clarity and less glare than Sony WEGA's. I like Panasonic, but don't have a clue how they rank on Plasmas. I heard Panasonic and Sony aren't necessarily the leaders in Plasma as they were in flat crts.

I guess 40-42" is fine for me.

HD channels are broadcasted mostly in 1080i I believe. So a 720 Panasonic should be good enough. But I would go with 1080p since clarity is really your most important factor. Plus the price diff is probably not that much.

All of your signs point to a plasma over lcd:

Clarity - Plasma (LCDs are catching up, but plasmas are still better)
Less light - Plasma (Plasmas reflect more light then LCDs but I think this is slightly overstated)

Sony does not make plasmas anymore. The best in order:

    Pioneer Elite
    Pioneer
    Panasonic
    Samsung

I would personally go with this tv:

    http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-Vie...2?ie=UTF8&s=audio-video&qid=1227925967&sr=1-2

I have no idea, but even if they do it'll be marginal. Prices on Amazon I would say move down by about $100 every month. But that tv is pretty low as it is.
