The Portland Trail Blazers and Memphis Grizzlies are seriously discussing a multiplayer trade that centers on the exchange of forward Travis Outlaw and point guard Mike Conley, league sources said Friday.

The talks have been ongoing for weeks, sources said, and could be inching toward a completion.

“[Portland GM] Kevin Pritchard needs to pull the trigger for this to happen,” one source familiar with the negotiations said.

The salaries of Outlaw and Conley would allow for a one-on-one swap, but both teams want to include additional players and contracts to satisfy other needs, including Portland’s Sergio Rodriguez and Memphis’ Hakim Warrick and Javaris Crittenton. It is unlikely that this trade will happen if it’s a straight-up exchange of Outlaw and Conley.

Outlaw, 24, and Conley, 21, are both represented by agent Bill Duffy, and a source said that he’s been actively involved in facilitating the deal.

Portland has long coveted Conley, in large part because of his childhood friendship with center Greg Oden. Conley and Oden grew up together in Indianapolis, playing together through a Final Four season at Ohio State. Pritchard knows that Conley has the credibility to get in Oden’s face when he needs a push, and that’s played an important part in his trade explorations.

The Blazers have been active on several trade fronts, including discussions earlier this season with the Atlanta Hawks that would’ve included a package for point guard Mike Bibby. Those talks died when the Hawks started the season with five straight victories.

I wish the Rockets could get in on this somehow...Hakim Warrick would be a good backup big...

...and Bibby wouldn't be too bad either if the Hawks are looking to get rid of him. :p

I'd figured Conley and Oden were going to be reunited sooner or later.

I understand the need to dump Outlaw since Martell Webster is coming back, but the talent difference here is huge. Outlaw+Sergio for Conley is completely one-sided, but the Blazers are in a corner and need to pull the trigger on a two-for-one or three-for-one trade because you can't have an 11-man rotation. Conley looks like he may be a bust.

Longer term, both Sergio and Outlaw were likely to leave the Blazers next summer anyway, but they should get more in return than just Conley. Bayless must be licking his chops because his talent leaves Conley in the dust.

The amount of young guards on the Blazers is just ridiculous.

They should send Bayless to memphis too.

Seems more like Portland is trying to salvage whatever it can instead of having Outlaw leave for nothing. Conley sucks. That dude was way overrated in college. On a talent scale that deal is almost as one sided as Kwame for Gasol.

This is dumb. Its like Portland has stockpiled so much young talent they are just doing things for the sake of doing things. I think Pritchard is addicted to making transactions, he needs rehab!

Conley does not look like he has the potential to become a championship caliber starting point guard. Outlaw is better than Webster IMO. I wouldn't be surprised if the Blazers signed Jay Williams, Pritchard is sick. You need rehab Pritchard, you need help.

With the emergence of Batum there's less of a role for Outlaw when Webster is back. Roy has been pushing for Batum to play ahead of Outlaw since the beginning of the season.

There's even less minutes at PF with Aldridge & Frye there.

The Blazers weakness is still their PG depth. Oden's also been ordinary so it could be a gamble that addresses a few issues.

Outlaw declared he couldn't stay happy for too long if he wasn't a starter. Rodriguez and his relationship with McMillan isn't something their young team needs and they allegedly couldn't dump Sergio this past off-season, no takers.

At least they're not turning LaFrentz's contract into Hinrich's. That's still possible though :(

Rudy is not really a PG he is a SG

They have Bayless already but even so Outlaw for Conley is a good deal for them.

this only makes sense for portland if they also send rodriguez with outlaw for conley. otherwise they will have a glut of PG's.

even then, you have to consider that they are giving away players who will leave for less talent in return. better than letting them leave, yes, but you have to think they could get something better.

Portland is making a mistake by trading Travis Outlaw especially for freakin Mike Conley. A more fair trade would be Webster for Conley. At least it evens out somewhat with Sergio leaving and Hakim Warrick coming. Still, the Blazers can get way better value for Outlaw. Oden can thank the Blazers and Conley can thank Oden.

On a sidenote T-Law would look hella good in a Rockets uniform.

Sergio has game he just needs the right coach. Von Wafer had nothing but good thinks to say about him.

Sergio is a serviceable point guard to say the least, I would trade Head for him in a second.

Sergio will be as good or better then Calderon. Bet on it.

How many good young PGs do the Blazers need? They already have Steve Blake, Sergio Rodriguez, and Jerryd Bayless (and let's not forget that Roy has pretty good PG skills). Also, what's in this for the Grizz? I like Outlaw's game, but who would be their starter at the 1? Kyle Lowry? OJ Mayo? I think they should keep Conley.

Sergio is a serviceable, smallish backup PG with very limited offensive skills. His "revamped" shooting stroke with more arch is worse than ever. Until Sergio can hit open jumpshots, he has a very limited upside. He won't be Calderon in his wildest pipedreams. If anyone takes your bet they will be throwing away money.

I would trade a towel boy or girl for Head. :p

As far as the trade, I wouldn't do it straight up either. Outlaw is clearly the better player involved and they should get more in return.
