Didn't Gandhi oppose the partition of Indian and was against the idea of Pakistan in the first place?

I ignored his response to me because that statement pretty much summed up the depth of his understanding of south asian politics. LOL.

Gandhi's proposal was to make Jinnah the prime minister of India, but the Hindus, who were a 75% majority at the time opposed this. Ironically, Jinnah had severe lung cancer, unbeknownst to Gandhi, Neru, and Luis Mountbatten. The theory holds that were they aware, they possibly wouldn't have pushed partition so quickly. Neru also encouraged Muslims to stay behind in India because he claimed it was a secular nation.

Gandhi did threaten a hunger strike when Pakistan's percentage of assets were not transferred immediately, but to claim that he was in favor of the idea of Pakistan at the outset is beyond laughable.

This is sad. My thought is that these are British Muslims. These guys look thick, strong, and healthy. People from the east like Pakistan and Afghanistan are usually skinny and malnutritioned. The Muslim centres in the UK should all be raided. Some of those guys say outrageous things there, such as let's have Sharia law in UK. Easy to say while they reap the benefits of a Western lifestyle.

Gandhi wanted one India and at one time Muslims, Hindus, and Sikhs all lived happily together in villages. Creation of Pakistan has caused a lot of problems.

Knowing very little about either Urdu or Hindi just curious about how different are they? Are they as different from Spanish to Portugese, where a casual observer might conclude that they are the same or from Spanish to French where there are many different words and a lot of the pronounciation if different enough as to be readily different?

It's different enough that people who speak either language can tell the difference, but at the same time, would be able to communicate very easily.

Casual observers would find it very difficult to tell the difference. The difference between Spanish and Portugese is much more noticeable.

absolutely true, my hindi is terrible at best i dont think i can really even converse too well and I wouldnt be able to tell the difference, my parents however can easily and I've seen them do so before.

I'm glad at least my family is safe, i dont have many members in Mumbai but they are all ok.

I was watching ND27 and Times Now yesterday with my dad (they are two indian news stations) and it was upsetting me the way they presented the news. I think ND27 had a quote from Aamir Khan, a prominent film actor, and his thoughts on the events. I was upset I dont care what Aamir Khan thinks I want to know if this has ended yet. Another newscaster on Times Now was sensationalizing and making everything over dramatic and I kept thinking if I was in Mumbai watching this broadcast this guy is doing nothing but raising my own paranoia and not trying to calm me down whatsoever. The same newscaster kept asking a Army commander about India Army secrets over and over...good thing the commander kept saying he couldnt comment about that.... it was just very unprofessional. My dad was very upset at that.

overall it extremely sad and unfortunate what had happened. Hopefully this event will at least open the eyes of a lot of people in india and more importantly the corrupt politicians to get their act together. Its a shame that it would take something like this to do so.

Hopefully as soon as they find the ones responsible they capture and kill them all.

wow. brilliant analysis. is brookings looking for an expert?

i'll just concentrate on shariah law bit. while obviously some percentage probably do want 'shariah law in uk' the thing creating controversy was 'shariah law' in domestic matters of inheritance and divorce. the same rights that have been granted to jewish community in england.

Police: Standoff over at Mumbai's Taj hotel

More than 150 people die after gunmen attack 10 sites across Mumbai

MUMBAI, India - Commandos killed two remaining militants making a last stand at the Taj Mahal hotel Saturday, Police Chief Hasan Ghafoor said, marking the end of one of the most brazen terror attacks in India’s history.

The fight was marked by sporadic gunfire and grenade blasts and culminated in a burst of fire and smoke from the the landmark hotel. It came less than a day after elite troops stormed a Jewish outreach center and found six hostages dead.

"The Taj operation is over. The last two terrorist holed up there have been killed," Ghafoor told The Associated Press.

The violence started Wednesday when assailants attacked 10 sites across Mumbai, India’s financial capital. More than 150 people were killed, including 15 foreigners.

Authorities are working to find out who was behind the attacks, claimed by a previously unknown group of suspected Islamic militants calling itself the Deccan Mujahideen.

Earlier Saturday, Indian forces had been targeting the landmark Taj Mahal hotel with grenades and gunfire as suspected Muslim militants made a last stand, just hours after elite commandos stormed a Jewish outreach center and found six hostages dead.

The bodies of New York Rabbi Gavriel Noach Holtzberg and his wife, Rivkah, were found at the Jewish center. Their newly orphaned son, Moshe, who turns 2 on Saturday, was scooped up by an employee Thursday as she fled the building.

Authorities scrambled to identify those responsible for the unprecedented attack, with Indian officials pointing across the border at rival Pakistan, and Pakistani leaders promising to cooperate in the investigation. A team of FBI agents was ordered to fly to India to investigate the attacks.

    Fighting stretches into third day
With the fighting stretching into a third day, commandos killed the last two gunmen inside the luxury Oberoi hotel, where 24 bodies had been found, authorities said. Dozens of people — including a man clutching a baby and about 20 airline crew members — were evacuated from the Oberoi earlier Friday.

"I'm going home. I'm going to see my wife," said Mark Abell, a Briton who had locked himself in his room during the siege.

The Taj Mahal hotel was wracked by hours of intermittent gunfire and explosions that continued into Saturday morning, even though authorities said earlier that they had cleared it of gunmen. Indian forces kept up a counterattack with grenades and trading gunfire with what authorities believed was one or perhaps two militants holed up in the ballroom. TV images showed shattered windows on the building's first floor.

CNN reported the government had cut off their live transmissions from the scene in Mumbai. Authorities have asked not to show live broadcasts of the battle because they believe the gunmen were monitoring the news. Most channels largely obliged.

The capture of the hotel would mark the end of one of the most brazen terror attacks in India's history.

    Counterstrikes by Indian forces
By Friday evening, at least nine gunmen had been killed and one arrested, said R. Patil, a top official in Maharashtra state, where Mumbai is the capital.

In the most dramatic of the counterstrikes Friday morning, masked Indian commandos rappelled from a helicopter to the rooftop of the Chabad Lubavitch Jewish center as snipers laid down cover fire.

For nearly 12 hours, explosions and gunfire erupted from the five-story building as the commandos fought their way downward, while thousands of people gathered behind barricades in the streets to watch.

The assault blew huge holes in the center, and, at one point, Indian forces fired a rocket at the building.

Soon after, elated commandos ran outside with their rifles raised over their heads in a sign of triumph.

But inside the Chabad House was a scene of tragedy.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak told Israel's Channel 1 TV that the bodies of three women and three men were found at the center. Some of the victims had been bound, Barak said. "All in all, it was a difficult spectacle," he said.

Local media reports, quoting top military officials, said two gunmen were found dead in the building.

I wish the media would give just as much attention to India's human rights violations in Kashmir that have gone on for a very long time as well.

Nice intelligent response...lol. At least the guy below tried to say something before rolling his eyes.

Sure Pakistan is guilty of human rights violations, but if you want to examine the root causes of terrorism in India like this most recent incident, you have to look at systematic, widespread, and brutal human rights violations in Kashmir perpetrated by the Indian government against that area's Muslim majority population. These violations and atrocities have gone on for many years.

I stayed at the Taj Mahal many years ago. Just a nightmare! They should hang the bastards that were captured by their nuts from the Gateway of India.
