Ok, we all know there will always be a bust in the Draft i mean does anyopne remember Pervis Ellison? <-- What a great 1st overall pick, Or how About Joe Smith Geez, let us not forget Sam Bowie in '84 Man i bet the Blazers were kicking themselves for not picking up Jordan. Or how about Good Ole Tractor Traylor in 96 man that guy rocks now. So who will be this years BUST!
I agree totally. I acutally used to kind of like him until I spent some time thinking about how his game might translate to the NBA. It became obvious to me how similar his faults are to those of Donyell Marshall in that he's a great college guy but he just doesn't have the quickness or overwhelming size to be anything speciall in the NBA.
True. But, Jeffries can do more with the ball but Marshall has a better shot. Marshall was also a shot-blocker in college. Weird.
Jeffries does not play aggresively. Marshall does. Jeffries will be a nice backup player. But not worth a Top 5 pick.
Qyntel Woods, at least for several years. Kedrick Brown was hyped, but hasn't lived up to it yet - but I'm willing to give them several years. But I think Woods will be a bust for several years.
Something makes me think that as great a resume as he has, Lonnie Baxter is going to be the next Oliver Miller...
Heh, Baxter won't go till the second round, or at best the late first round. At that point I don't think you can be a huge bust, more of just a mild disappointment. As for my prediction, Chris Marcus will be the biggest bust of the draft. I think he'll have nagging injuries for his carrear and won't be able to compete with the speed of the NBA game. He had enough trouble doing it in the college game. I don't think he's the "shaq stopper" people think he can be.
How bout Jamal Sampson? I'll be honest i haven't seen much of him but he is only a freshman and hasn't even made an impact yet.
You obviously don't remember Marshall's first 3 or 4 years in the league. Do you remember him telling the media how much he wished he was back in college, because he didn't like the NBA because it was too much of a business? You do remember that he was the #4 overall pick in '94 don't you, picked right after Grant Hill? He was a tremendous bust for at least his first four years. His fg% for his first 7 years were .413, .374, .398, .413, .414, .421, and .394. This was from a guy who was runner up for player of the year to Glen Robinson, was a unanimous 1st team All-American, and averaged 25.1 pts/g on .511 shooting. Of course, that was the same draft with Sharone Wright at 6, Yinka Dare at 14, Carlos Rodgers at 11, and Eric Montross at 9, so I guess he may look better in the reflected light of his peers, but Jefferies, after his sophomore year, is in the exact same 'place' that Marshall was after his Sophomore year, and if he comes out he will almost definately be a lottery pick.
I agree. People call him that because he is so big. But, he's more "big country" big rather than Shaq big. Shaq is pretty muscular he was more productive in college as well.
I'll say that Dan Dickau will be the biggest bust. I'm not basing that on anything but his cocky attitude. At the College 3 Point Shootout he told the announcers that he was hands down the best shooter in the country and then he went out and had one of the lowest scores and was eliminated in the first round.
When we talk of busts I think we typically look at top 3 picks. Currenty, those three are Williams, Ming, and Wagner (form NBAdraft.net). All three could be busts in that Williams and Wagner are SGs having to become PGs and Ming is not currently a low post type player. They may never develop into major contributers to changing Golden State from lottery champs to NBA champs. Plus the players immediately below them could become hall-of-famers: Woods, Goodsen, & Jeffries.
Drew Gooden. Did anyone else notice Gooden disappeared against Maryland? Most top-notch players elevate their games against top-notch teams ... Caron Butler against Maryland, for example.
Dunleavy was way ahead of Gooden as far as the AWAL list last turney. Gooden didn't have a great game against Maryland, but he wasn't bad and did bring them close late. Gooden's totally shut down defense both on the wing and inside on a very good offensive player in Luke Jackson sold me on him. Gooden isn't going to offensively dominante, but he doesn't do anything bad and will be a solid NBA player. Dunleavy's ole defense on Wilcox, Jeffries and Prince this year showed I want no part of him through lotto pick.
Be careful how you define "bust" when referring to these players. Do you mean that the player will have a disappointing rookie year? First 2-3 seasons? Or entire career? Remember, some people were laughing at Toronto for taking McGrady at #9 after his first couple of seasons. It wasn't until Tracy's last season in Toronto that people started to see how good he was.
I think that someone is a 'bust' if you expect something from them and get much less. McGrady wasn't a 'bust' to the Toronto management, because they expected to get a player who'd take several years to develop, and planned accordingly. Someone like Danny Ferry, or Donyell Marshall, however, can be considered busts because, while they eventualy developed into meaningfull contributors, they were expected to come in right away and be good, if not great.
