Longest streak of losing seasons in the NFL Oilers - 6 (1981-1986, went to the playoffs in 1980 and 1987 though) Texans - 7 (my bad, I am counting 2008-2009) Years in the NFL until winning season Oilers - 6 Texans - ? (8 at a minimum) Years in the NFL until playoffs Oilers - 9 Texans ? Number of wins in last 7 seasons in Houston (through the 11th week of the last season) Oilers - 56 Texans - 35 Playoff wins in last 11 seasons Oilers - 3 Texans - 0 Cowboys - 0
that i used to think there were some dry times with the oilers but frankly they were dominate compared to the stretch we have seen from the Texans. I remember blackouts with the Oilers, and it has not even been close to that with the Texans even with much more expensive tickets. No one can blame a Texans fan of ever being fairweather.
ehhh.... back-to-back 1-win seasons; a 5-year stretch where they won 15 games; a 23-game road losing streak (the # may be off a few)... not to mention just a bevy of off-field embarrassments... we all likely romanticize the oilers but save for 3 relatively brief stretches ('60-'61; '78-'80; '87-'93) and the occassional one-season anomaly, they were, by and large, an irrelevant, horribly-run, losing franchise. it's really disheartening they seemed to have gotten their act together in tennessee. they've been, more or less, a consistently good team over the past 12 years.
It's amazing what happens to teams that have a stable coaching situation. Landry's cowgirls, Knoll/Cower's steelers, Wyche's Bengals.... OK, that last one was a joke, but you get the point. When we were granted an expansion franchise, I remember wishing Jeff Fisher would come back to Houston since he lived here. That would have been nice. In fact, I told him that when I met him at the car show a couple of years after the Oilers left. He just smiled and said thanks. I wish he would have listened to me.
and one of the reasons i hope they keep kubiak around. if what the players say is true - that they love the guy and love playing for him - then that right there is all i need: he should stay. two things about fisher i really admire: he makes smart, decisive staffing decisions and lets them coach; and his players seem to really love playing for him. i hope kubiak takes a page and goes and gets an experienced, well-regarded DC from outside the organization. no internal promotions - we need fresh blood. my guess is that he'll go after mike nolan, another old bronco ally, and that wouldn't be a terrible choice.
No contest, I went to the Oilers funeral on Sunday, December 15, 1996. I was a big Oilers fan. Once they moved I rooted for whoever played them. The Texans are my team.
I don't where you were but the Oilers had some of the most craptastic teams in the history of pro football. How about back to back 1-13 years in the 70's. How about during the 80's the NFL records for consecutive road losses. There were seasons in order of 1-9 in 82, 2-14 in 83, 3-13 in 84,5-11 in 85 and 86. Its funny as time goes on people forgot all the crap that went on with that team and only remember when things were good.
i remember how encouraged we were by the strike year...and the fact our "scab" players were better than everyone else's!!
thats fine but all the stuff I put in the first post is all true. When the Texans came into the NFL they were the only new team and got the first pick, the oilers came in with the rest of the AFL and had to fend for themselves.
it was cleveland. we beat them and the broncos, both on the road, and then lost to the flutie-led pats.
