Vice president, former AG, state senator indicted

McALLEN, Texas — A South Texas grand jury has indicted Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on charges related to the alleged abuse of prisoners in Willacy County's federal detention centers.

The indictment criticizes Cheney's investment in the Vanguard Group, which holds interests in the private prison companies running the federal detention centers. It accuses Cheney of a conflict of interest and "at least misdemeanor assaults" on detainees by working through the prison companies.

Gonzales is accused of using his position while in office to stop an investigation into abuses at the federal detention centers.

Another indictment charges state Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr. with profiting from his public office by accepting honoraria from prison management companies.

The indictments were first reported by KRGV-TV.

    Interesting.

My first thought is that this is a Rove planned event that gives W. an avenue to pardon all those who built and participated in the torture infrastructure.

OK, I did a little reading. Here's an article on the DA. I'm not sure we should be surprised.

    Hear me now
Oh thou bleak and unbearable world,
    Thou art base and debauched as can be;
And a knight with his banners all bravely unfurled
Now hurls down his gauntlet to thee!
    I am I, Don Quixote,
    The Lord of La Mancha,
My destiny calls and I go,
And the wild winds of fortune
    Will carry me onward,
    Oh whithersoever they blow.
    Whithersoever they blow,
    Onward to glory I go!

It is hard to say what is going on with the DA. Obviously there is some politics going on. From talking to my wife's relatives they are quite lenient down there when it comes to first time offenders and non-violent crime. That is a good thing. One of the reasons is that people in poor counties don't have the money to waste constantly locking people up for long periods like folks in Harris County like to do. Also, in a smaller environment the jurors tend to have a better idea which neigbors are actually a threat to society. It seems strange to us in Harris County who are used to executing more folks and probably having longer sentences than just about anywhere else in the US and hence the developed world.

The private prison system and its inevitable abuses in the drive to make more money is a disgrace.

Dude sounds crazy, which wasn't a surprise given the indictment. You can't realistically hope to prosecute the VP in a county court. I hope to God this man doesn't make more money than me. I'd be depressed.

    Lol!
